1938 Frazer-Nash BMW 320 Coupe
Chassis Number: 92210
Rgstration Number: FGC706
BMW’s 320 is quite a rarity among between-the-Wars machinery from the Bavarian manufacturer, having been launched in 1937, with some 4,200 examples produced before it was replaced by the 321 in 1938.
Based on the preceding 319, the 320 was built on a shortened 326 chassis and featured the 326’s 2-litre straight-six power unit with 4-speed manual gearbox and suspension – independent at the front, live axle at the rear – carried over from the 329 (which car the 320 closely resembled, though being smaller and less expensive).
With 45bhp from its smooth six, the 320 was good for a top speed of 85mph and this high performance machine was well regarded for its road manners and handling from the independent front suspension, as well as its quality engineering, fine finish and good power-to-weight ratio.
London-based Frazer-Nash were the BMW importers for the UK (as well as producing their own distinctive brand of sports cars with their chain-driven models) and all BMWs sold in the UK during the 1930s were referred to as Frazer-Nash BMWs.
The car:
This attractive 320 saloon was first delivered to an owner near Banbury, who continued to enjoy its performance and comfort for 40 years. The BMW changed hands in 1978 and spent a further 20 years in West London, in the hands of its second owner. Purchased by John Giles of TT Workshop, the car was renovated by his apprentices to an extremely high standard, which has been maintained over the intervening 26 years.
Fourth owner John Maylan – a renowned collector – bought the BMW in 2010, since when it has been used, enjoyed and cherished. It has been confirmed by the BMW Historic Motor Club as the sole-remaining example in the UK.
With its elegant claret and black coachwork and a beautiful grey leather interior, this outstanding BMW is clearly a superb survivor and a testament to the care that has been lavished on it throughout its 86 year life. Both engine & chassis numbers are matching.
On the road 60 to 70MPH cruising is effortless with excellent oil pressure & cool running from the silky smooth inline six cylinder engine. It is a beautifully proportioned machine & attracts admirers & photographers wherever it appears. The interior is extremely spacious, comfortable & with a light & airy feel compared to say an equivalent Derby Bentley. Indeed it is such a joy to drive that I have been keeping at home & using it as my daily driver around town. The gear box has synchromesh on 3rd & 4th gears making the car very easy to drive.
Being a pre war car it is elible for assorted VCC events & indeed comes with a VSCC Passport confirming elibility.
Summary:
Quick, comfortable and in fully restored condition, this Frazer-Nash BMW is ready to charm a new owner with its poise and elegance.
