Mark III Coupé – A memory from America’s golden age...
The year is 1958... America is on top of the world.
The Space Race has begun. Elvis dominates the airwaves. The highways are filling with cars larger, longer and more extravagant than ever before. Chrome glistens in the sun, tailfins point towards the future, and manufacturers compete to build the most impressive machine ever to roll on four wheels.
Yet even in an era when excess was the norm, there were still cars that stood apart.
The design department behind Continental had truly made its mark on the drawing board. The result was a design icon measuring almost six metres in length.
Not merely a model within the Lincoln range, but a marque in its own right. Created for those who believed an ordinary luxury car simply was not enough...
No expense was spared. Vast expanses of steel. Chrome in quantities that can barely be described — it has to be experienced. A front end stretching forward like a monument to a bygone age. Every detail tells the story of an era when engineers and designers were allowed to think big — and then think even bigger.
Beneath the seemingly endless bonnet sits Lincoln’s enormous 430-cubic-inch V8. Seven litres of American displacement, delivering 375 horsepower with effortless authority. This is power from a time when nobody questioned fuel consumption, and engine capacity was measured in pride.
Its technical solutions and extensive electrical equipment demonstrate just how advanced the car truly was. This was not merely a means of transport. It was a technological flagship — a demonstration of what could be achieved when cost was allowed to take a back seat.
And perhaps that is precisely why cars like this will never return. How could anyone recreate an era when dreams were built from steel and chrome? When engineers were given free rein and designers worked without concern for limitations?
Sadly, you cannot.
Instead, you preserve the few examples that remain.
This coupé is therefore far more than a classic car. It is a piece of American history. A rolling monument to the optimism, abundance and belief in the future that defined the late 1950s.
And, not least, this particular example presents in exceptionally good condition.
Although the car appears enormous and almost impossible to overlook in modern traffic, only 2,328 examples of the Hardtop Coupé were produced. By comparison, Continental built a total of 12,550 cars in 1958 across four body styles, with the coupé being among the most exclusive models in the range.
This was also the first year of the new Mark III series — and the only year in which this model carried the Mark III designation. The Mark IV followed just one year later, with the Mark V arriving in 1960. For this reason, the 1958 model holds a special position among collectors seeking the original version of this spectacular generation.
The international market for these cars has remained stable in recent years. Project cars and examples requiring extensive restoration generally sell for considerably less, while good, well-maintained cars typically trade in the region of NOK 750,000–1,000,000. Exceptional examples with extensive documentation, correctly executed restorations, generous equipment specifications and concours-level presentation can achieve values well above NOK 1 million.
International valuations and auction results indicate that the very best examples sit at the upper end of the market, with prices of NOK 1.5 million and above.
This particular car belongs in the upper tier, although it is not a concours-level example. It has therefore been attractively priced in accordance with its condition and position in the market.
It is easy to understand why cars like this continue to attract collectors around the world. And when you stand beside it, you begin to understand why the world has never seen anything quite like it since.
