Beschreibung

Hilton & Moss are delighted to present a unique opportunity in the shape of this wonderful, low mileage BMW Z1 Roadster.

A landmark in BMW’s history and one of the most distinctive sports cars of its era, the BMW Z1 remains a fascinating expression of the marque’s engineering ambition and willingness to challenge convention. Developed by BMW Technik GmbH as a showcase for innovative thinking, the Z1 brought together advanced construction, striking design and an engaging driving experience in a package unlike anything else on the road. The Z1 would lay the foundations for the inimitable Z-Series cars that followed and continue to innovate today.

Unveiled in 1987 before entering limited production in 1989, the Z1 was conceived as a forward-looking sports car that would explore new possibilities in automotive design. Its most recognisable feature is undoubtedly its electrically operated doors, which retract vertically into the body sills, allowing occupants to drive with the doors lowered. Combined with its low-slung profile, sculpted bodywork and distinctive proportions, this ingenious feature gives the Z1 a character entirely its own.

Beneath its innovative exterior lies a thoroughly engaging mechanical package. Power comes from BMW’s naturally aspirated 2.5-litre straight-six engine, producing approximately 170bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Derived from the contemporary BMW 325i, this refined and responsive powerplant delivers a wonderfully smooth power delivery, accompanied by the unmistakable soundtrack of a BMW straight-six. With its rear-wheel-drive configuration, balanced chassis and independent rear suspension, the Z1 offers an involving driving experience that remains rewarding by modern standards.

The Z1 was also notable for its construction, featuring a steel monocoque with removable exterior body panels and a specially developed suspension system. These innovations reflected BMW Technik’s experimental approach, with many of the car’s engineering solutions demonstrating the potential for future development within the automotive industry.

The Z1 was built with a limited production of just 8,000 cars between 1989 and 1991. Every car was built in left-hand drive configuration and perhaps unsurprisingly 80% of the total production would be sold to the German market with strong initial demand in the model.

The example that we are pleased to present at our showrooms is nothing short of excellent. An earlier car, first registered in June 1989, it would arrive straight to the UK. Presented in the excellent shade of Black Metallic with a printed Grey leather interior, the car presents in a superb condition throughout. The folding soft top is stowed below a rear ‘horseshoe’ cover and is easily raised and lowered as required.

Most notably, the car has travelled just 10,034km (6,220 miles) in its lifetime and has recently undergone extensive recommission by Hilton & Moss following a period of storage with the most recent owner. Full detail of the work carried out can be shared upon request.

Complimented by a history file detailing the cars history, ownership and care, alongside original booklets and manuals, this low mileage example would be an excellent addition to any collection, or simply a great choice for an enthusiast looking for an enjoyable sports car to make the most of on the open road, being particularly well suited to European touring.

Today, the BMW Z1 offers a compelling proposition for the enthusiast seeking something genuinely different. It combines the mechanical integrity and driving appeal of a traditional BMW, with innovative engineering and a design that continues to attract attention more than three decades after its introduction.

Having been inspected and recommissioned by our team, this Z1 is poised and ready to embark on a new challenge with its next owner. Of course, being over 25 years old, the car is eligible for import to the USA and many other countries as a classic vehicle. We would be happy to assist with international transport where necessary.
