AM112/1*772*
EVG 404H / MXO 211
- Manufactured in March 1970
- Acquired in England by the current owner through us in December 2015, soon after it had arrived from Sweden
- Enjoyed in recent years as part of a small collection of classic Maserati cars
- Good history file containing many invoices for restoration, servicing and maintenance work
- Recommissioned and repainted by us between 2016 and 2018
- A very good example of a late Mexico featuring the most desirable specification of 4.7 V8 engine, power steering, and air conditioning
Maserati’s wonderful Vignale designed Mexicos are rare cars as only 485 were manufactured in both 4.2 and 4.7 V8 engined configurations. Extremely practical and usable with their two-plus-two seating and large glass area affording excellent visibility, they are often over-looked as so few are aware of their existence. To us, this is one of the many factors that make them so appealing.
A Maserati SpA production certificate from December 2015 states this Mexico was manufactured in March 1970, and originally had Blu Pervinca paint with a Senape (tan) Connolly leather interior. It is unknown where the car was sold new, but we know it was in Sweden from at least the early 1980’s, where it was registered as JAH 893.
The history file contains Swedish annual inspection sheets from June 1982 to July 2005 and also an old notebook that details the dates and distances of journeys undertaken during a period of the car’s life there. The log starts in August 1983 and it is likely this is when a new owner started enjoying the car. Regular but limited usage continued until the end of 1994 when it appears the car was stored for a few years, after which it was then driven on just a few occasions. The final entry in the log is from April 2004, and it is recorded that just 2,720 kilometres were driven during the 21 year period. However, the registration papers indicate the owner would keep the car until the spring of 2014.
The previous English owner acquired chassis 772 in the summer of 2015 and imported it to England, and soon after its arrival the car visited McGrath Maserati for a full inspection. It had clearly been in storage for many years so we were asked to undertake a thorough recommissioning, and during the following two years the car underwent a body restoration with us that resulted in the bare metal being repainted in Blu Scuro, a darker and non-metallic blue from its original shade, although still a correct Maserati colour from the period.
Additional work during the restoration included re-chroming the bumpers, an overhaul of the radiator, air conditioning system, fuel tanks, brake callipers, axle, carburettors and fuel system. New Michelin XWX tyres and a new clutch were also fitted. For the interior, new carpets were installed although fortunately the original leather was retained on the seats.
Since completion of the work, 772 has been greatly enjoyed as part of a small collection of Maserati and other Italian cars. Returned to us for servicing and maintenance, significant recent work includes the overhauling of the wheels with new rims.
The car is a regular attendee of Maserati Club events and recently took part in the Club’s tours of France and Scotland, so it has certainly proven its reliability on many long journeys around the country and abroad.
Finished in a lovely colour combination and retaining its characterful and patinated interior, this Mexico with it powerful V8 engine and 5-speed manual transmission is a very good example of one of the best Maserati cars of the period, with the additional benefit of having space for family and friends to enjoy the journey with too. It comes with a good history file detailing the care and expenditure on the car during the current ownership.
