Beschreibung

Model history
The Mexico's design was derived from a 2+2 prototype bodywork shown on the Vignale stand at the October 1965 Salone di Torino and built upon a 4.9-litre 5000 GT chassis, rebodied after it had been damaged. As the car after the show was sold to Mexican president Adolfo López Mateos, the model became known as the Mexico. By coincidence, John Surtees won the Mexican Grand Prix on a Cooper-Maserati T81 the following year. Vignale's prototype was so well received that Maserati immediately made plans to put a version into production.

The production Maserati Mexico first debuted in August 1966 at the 20° Concorso internazionale di eleganza per auto in Rimini, while its international première was at the October Paris Motor Show. It was built on the first generation Quattroporte chassis with a wheelbase shortened by 11 cm.

Originally powered by a 4.7-litre 90° V8 fed by four twin-choke 38 DCNL5 Weber carburetors, the car was later, contrary to Maserati tradition, offered with the smaller 4.2-litre V8 engine.

In total 485 Mexicos were produced, 305 with the 4.2 litre engine, and just 175 with the strong 4.7 litre engine.

This specific Maserati ‘Gran Turismo’ Mexico 4700 was ordered on 26 June 1967 and delivered through Rolma Automobili S.r.l. - Milano to Brescia, Italy on 18 July 1967. Brescia is the beating heart of classic motoring Italy and probably worldwide. The first owner was Dr. Belponer, first President of Scuderia Brescia Corse racing team. Dr. Belponer loved fast cars and owned several important cars such as a Maserati 5000 GT. According to the Certificato d’Origine Maserati S.P.A, the original matching number rare 4719cc engine is fitted. The car was originally finished in 'Argento Auteuil' with a black Connoly leather interior. We are researching its early history.

In 2017 the car was exported from Denver, United States of America, to The Netherlands for the current Dutch owner. The car was then in mid-restoration condition. The current owner is a real enthusiast and completed the restoration mostly himself in the period 2017-2018. According to the owner, the engine and gearbox were completely overhauled in the USA. The original leather interior was well kept so only cleaned and treated and repaired where necessary. The carpets and roof-trim were nicely replaced in 2019. The restoration in Netherlands is documented with pictures and invoices. Although the owner chose to make the car blue, he did opt for an original Maserati colour.

The Mexico shown here is a nicely restored and rare, early production Mexico 4700 with the biggest and most powerful V8 engine. This car drives well. We inspected the car in the workshop and we measured the compression and leak down of the engine all to fine result. Handling is excellent and the ZF gearbox is a delight. The engine shows its racing heritage. The output for the 4.7 litre V8 engines was, according to Maserati, between 290 and 335 BHP. Enough for a written 252 km/h with the long rear axle.

The elegant car benefits from an electric sunroof and original air conditioning. Comes with Certificato d’Origine Maserati S.P.A, factory copy's of the original final tests (data sheet) and the original delivery note which is a nice read!

Price is euro 112.000,-.

This wonderful Maserati perfectly defines a gentlemen’s sportscar from the sixties, especially with the strong V8 engine and classic colour configuration. Dutch registered.
