Description:
The Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato is regarded as one of the most desirable British sports car icons of the 1960s. Between 1960 and 1963, only 19 to 20 examples were originally built, each hand-crafted with an ultra-lightweight aluminium body by Zagato in Milan. The aim was clear: to rival the Ferrari 250 GT SWB – both on the road and on the race track. In the 1980s, the so-called Sanction II models were created in collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato, largely built from remaining original parts. To celebrate Zagato’s centenary in 2019, a further 19 DB4 GT Zagato Continuation cars were produced alongside 19 modern DBS GT Zagato, sold exclusively as pairs for several million pounds.
This car represents a rare opportunity to acquire a DB4 GT Zagato that has been completely built up new with the utmost precision. The rebuild was carried out on the basis of a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series II, using the same specialist workshops involved in the 2019 Continuation programme – but crucially on an original chassis with correct chassis number. The most respected names in the field were entrusted with the work: Cleve Smart constructed the aluminium Zagato body, RS Williams upgraded the engine and gearbox, Spraytec completed the paintwork, interior and final assembly. The engine was enlarged to 4.5 litres with twin-plug ignition, and the 4-speed gearbox with overdrive was comprehensively rebuilt. The crucial distinction from the pure Continuation models – which were manufactured entirely from new parts, lack an original identity and are only conditionally road-registerable – is that this car is based on an original DB4 Series II, retaining a unique identity, full eligibility for road registration, and existing UK registration documents. German registration can be supplied upon request. Accompanying the car are numerous invoices, the original Aston Martin Build Sheet, and the historic Log Book. The result is a car presented in outstanding condition, with a rebuild executed to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Both mechanically and cosmetically, this DB4 GT Zagato is finished to a level that meets even the most exacting collector’s expectations.
