History

Chris Smith founded Westfield Sportscars in 1982 after his Lotus XI-inspired project attracted buyers. The XI came first; the Seven-influenced 7SE then established the marque. Early styling changed after Caterham litigation, and the resulting SE, IRS-equipped SEi and wider SEiW became genuinely Westfield rather than a badge-engineered copy. Factory-built cars, component packages and home builds all exist, so a Westfield’s exact specification must be established from its file, not its name.

Highlights

The line spans Ford Crossflow, CVH, Zetec and Duratec cars, Vauxhall C20XE builds, Mazda-donor SDVs, Rover-V8 SEiGHTs, motorcycle-powered MegaBlade and Megabusa cars, and later Sport packages. A narrow SE can have a live axle; a SEi adds independent rear suspension; a SEiW adds cockpit room. This breadth is appealing, but means engine, axle, brake and wiring quality are individual-car questions.

Technical Data

Recent realised prices give useful, not absolute, anchors: a 2004 SEiW made £7,031 in 2024; a 2009 Sport £9,788 in 2024; a modified 280bhp Sport £10,200 in 2025; and a factory 2003 SEiGHT £11,739 in 2026. Provenance, registration and workmanship explain the spread more than paint. A £5,979 1990 SE sale in 2026 is a reminder that recommissioning costs can swallow a tempting entry price.

Market Overview & Buying Tips

Inspect the tubular chassis from beneath, around suspension pickups and behind aluminium panels; corrosion, poor weld repairs and failed coating are structural concerns. Check GRP for star cracks, especially mounting holes, and look behind wraps. Follow every hose, wire and brake line: tidy routing and proper fasteners indicate a careful builder. Identify the donor engine and gearbox, read cooling and service invoices, test the clutch and verify that brakes, tyres, geometry and dampers suit road use. Confirm roll bar, harness condition, weather gear and whether you fit the pedal box.

Driving Feel

For a UK car, the V5C, VIN, build record, IVA/SVA evidence where applicable and MOT history matter. A qualifying 40-year-old vehicle may be MOT-exempt, but exemption does not make defects acceptable. Imports need the correct NOVA and registration trail. Clubs and specialists remain invaluable because Ford and Mazda service parts are accessible while chassis-specific panels and documentation may not be.

Design

On road, low mass makes even a modest four-cylinder car alert. A Zetec or Duratec SEiW is often the usable answer for lanes and touring; the V8 offers effortless shove, while a bike-engine car turns every shift into a commitment. The open cockpit, exposed wheels and unfiltered steering reward a dry morning and a careful driver, not motorway anonymity. Westfield’s appeal is its engineering conversation: buy the most coherent, documented build rather than the biggest claimed output.
