Alpine A 310 Classic Cars for Sale

The Alpine A310 was a high-end sportscar which was built by Alpine, a subsidiary of Renault. Alpine focused on success in sportscar racing, GT racing and rallying, and was in existence from 1955 – 1995. The Alpine A310 was produced from 1971 – 1984.

History of the Alpine A310: Sportscars for Racing

Alpine was once an independent company which developed racing cars using Renault engines. Alpine was acquired by Renault in 1973, two years after production began on the Alpine A310. The Alpine A310 was the successor of the Alpine A110. Like the A110 the first Alpine A310 was designed for sportscar racing. Aerodynamics and speed-enhancing improvements were made on the engine. The A110’s 71 kw (95 hp) Gordini engine was replaced in the A310 with a 17TS/Gordini which ran at a maximum 127 PS (125 hp).

Alpine A310's Alterations in Style and Speed

The A310 underwent further changes as Renault worked to develop the car’s speed and style. Improvements to later versions of the A310 continued with the 1976 version Alpine A310 PRV V6, which had 150 PS and could attain 137 mph. The body underwent a significant style overhaul by Robert Opron, whose design team had helped bankrupt Citroen only two years earlier. The Alpine A310 PRV V6 was Renault’s top-end performance model at that time and their development showpiece. This version also had a heavier-at-tail weight distribution which gave it comparable manageability to the Porsche 911. Out of the Group 4 racing versions of the A310 emerged a GT racing car: the Alpine A310 V6 Pack GT Kit Boulogne, which was built from 1983-1984. This GT version of the A310 contained an enhanced engine that could reach 146 mph, but there were relatively few of them produced – a mere 27 Alpine A310 V6 Pack GT Kit Boulognes were made.

Alpine A310’s Artisanal Production and Racing Success

All A310 versions demanded artisanal production techniques and required well over 100 hours to build. This car enjoyed high performance in Group 4 racing; and, in 1977, the Alpine A310-V6 won the French Rally Championship. In spite of the efforts made at improving the engine and manageability, the Alpine A310’s predecessor outperformed the car in terms of racing success. Production of the Alpine A310 was discontinued July 1984.
