Original Memminger Cabriolet (build 2022), condition grade 1 appraisal, 2.3-liter fuel-injected engine, Midnight Blue
Highlights
This Volkswagen 1303 Cabriolet is not a later modified Beetle, but an original Memminger vehicle that was completely rebuilt in 2022. A TÜV SÜD classic car appraisal from February 2026 certifies a condition grade of 1 as well as a reconstruction value of 245,503 euros. The newly developed 2.3-liter fuel-injected engine with around 100 hp, the comprehensively revised structure, and the high-quality interior underline the ambition of a modern handcrafted classic. With only around 1,191 kilometers since completion, the vehicle presents itself in an almost new condition.
General information / model history
The VW 1303 Cabriolet marks the final stage in the development of the classic Beetle. With its curved windshield, improved suspension, and increased comfort level, it is considered the most technically refined version of the series. Until the end of production in January 1980, the Cabriolet remained a key part of Volkswagen’s identity—built by Karmann and long since more of a lifestyle icon than a mere means of transport.
Memminger takes this base and transforms it into a new dimension. Unlike traditional restorations, Memminger follows the approach of a complete rebuild, bringing substance, technology, and craftsmanship to a level closer to a manufactory than industrial mass production. Original Memminger vehicles are not simple conversions, but consistently reinterpreted classics with their own identity.
This vehicle Exterior
The body of this vehicle was completely newly built as part of the Memminger reconstruction and, according to the appraisal, is in new-car condition. The “Midnight Blue” (LE5Z) paint finish shows a flawless, even surface with no visible defects. Panel gaps, fit and finish, and detail quality are well above original production standards. The blue Sonnenland soft top blends harmoniously into the overall appearance and emphasizes the period-correct character.
Interior
The interior was completely redesigned and combines classic Beetle elements with modern material quality. Recaro seats in genuine saddle-brown leather, an extensive leather package, and a high-quality bouclé carpet set define the cabin. This is complemented by additional instruments, discreet integration of modern technology such as DAB+ radio and Bluetooth, and numerous handcrafted details that clearly reflect the manufactory approach.
Technical
Technically, this vehicle represents a complete re-engineering based on the classic Beetle. The installed Memminger Type 1 fuel-injected engine has a displacement of 2,276 cc and produces around 100 hp with approximately 190 Nm of torque. Engine management is handled by a modern system with fuel injection and mapped ignition. Additional upgrades include a reinforced gearbox, adapted gearing, ventilated front disc brakes, rear disc brakes, Bilstein suspension, and speed-sensitive power steering. The result is a driving experience far removed from the original Beetle and closer to a modern lightweight sports car.
History
First registration dates back to July 1, 1980. The current condition is based on a complete rebuild by Memminger in 2022. According to the appraisal, the vehicle has had only one previous owner. The recorded mileage is approximately 1,191 km since the rebuild, confirming its near-new condition.
Service / documents
The vehicle comes with a comprehensive TÜV SÜD classic car appraisal (No. 3108375, dated 03/02/2026), documenting the exceptional condition and the extensive technical and craftsmanship effort of the rebuild. The reconstruction value is stated as 245,503 euros, with a condition grade of 1. The report also details the complete renewal of body, chassis, drivetrain, and interior.
Summary / conclusion
This Memminger 1303 Cabriolet is far more than a restored Volkswagen. It is a completely rebuilt manufactory vehicle with clear provenance, documented quality, and a technical concept that translates the original Beetle idea into the present. The combination of original Memminger build, condition grade 1, and near-new appearance makes this example especially attractive for collectors seeking not only originality but also driving substance. In this form, the vehicle occupies a segment that can hardly be compared to classic vintage cars.
Comment / personal impression
An original Memminger feels less like a restored classic and more like a Beetle that Volkswagen never built—but perhaps should have. This example feels remarkably consistent: new, precise, and technically mature, without losing its character. That balance is exactly what makes it so appealing.
