Model & history
For sale is a Fiat Moretti 850 Sportiva S2, model year 1966. In the Italian ACI/PRA records and in the ASI homologation certificate the car is registered as “FIAT 850 S Moretti”. The body has two seats and a luggage shelf in the rear, with no rear bench. Within the Moretti Sportiva model family this corresponds to the 2‑seater version commonly referred to as the Sportiva S2.
The car was first registered in Italy in 1966. A copy of the extract (“Certificato Cronologico”) from the ACI / PRA office in Perugia is available and documents all entries from first registration up to export in 2001. From 30/10/1989 the car was owned by Piero Moretti from Perugia, who had it classified by Automotoclub Storico Italiano (ASI) in 1994 as “Fiat 850 S Moretti, red/black”, grade II (6.2). On 03/12/2001 the Moretti was deregistered in the PRA for export and was purchased by my brother in Germany at the end of 2001; since then the car has been in our family ownership.
Bodywork & interior
Visually, the Moretti presents itself in an honest, driveable condition with patina. The car was restored in Italy in 2001; since then, several minor bodywork issues (local paint defects, small areas requiring attention) have developed. A Classic Data appraisal states that, once these issues are rectified, the car can be brought up towards condition grade 2‑.
The body features the rare twin‑headlamp front end, already documented in the ASI photo from the 1990s and considered a period‑correct, accepted configuration. The coupé has a black interior (vinyl), two seats and a rear luggage shelf. Door cards, carpets and seats have been refurbished in recent years. The interior appears largely original with age‑appropriate patina.
Engine & mechanics
The car is currently fitted with a larger Fiat/Autobianchi four‑cylinder engine with 1,049 cm³ and 55 hp as stated in the German registration document. This engine was built up from individual parts by a specialist workshop; identification of the unit was based on the engine casting codes and it was duly entered into the vehicle documents. The engine runs in principle, but still requires further tuning (uneven running, further fine adjustment of carburettor/ignition recommended). The car is driveable, but the mechanicals should be further optimised before intensive use.
Originally, the car was conceived with a Fiat 850 engine of type 100G.002 with 843 cm³ (as documented in the ASI papers). A previously installed 843‑cm³ engine is included separately and comes with the car; its exact history in relation to the factory‑fitted unit is not fully documented and should be verified by the buyer if required. The front axle and front disc brakes have been renewed.
