This 1964 Fiat 500 D is not just any small car, but a fully and impeccably restored example of the iconic model range, featuring the characteristic rear-hinged ‘suicide doors’ (‘porte a vento’). The restoration was carried out entirely in our own workshop and is fully documented. The TARGA ORO ASI certification attests to its exceptional condition and historical authenticity – the highest accolade awarded by the Italian classic car association ASI. A museum-quality vehicle, ready for the garage of a true connoisseur and collector.
The Fiat 500 D was built between 1960 and 1965 and represents the further development of the legendary “Nuova 500”, with which Dante Giacosa mobilised Italy after the war. The Type D marks an important step in development: increased engine power (499 cc, 17.5 hp), a larger folding roof, and improved equipment – whilst retaining the distinctive ‘porte a vento’ that give the vehicle its unique character. Among connoisseurs, the 500 D is now regarded as the purest and most characterful representative of the classic Cinquecento family, even ahead of the later Type F with conventionally hinged doors.
The bodywork was completely overhauled as part of the full restoration. Gap tolerances, paint quality and finish details are of concours standard. The rear-hinged doors – the unmistakable stylistic feature of the Type D – operate precisely and lend the vehicle its original character.
The interior has been restored true to the original and to concours quality. All components have either been professionally overhauled or replaced with original-specification spare parts. No compromises, no ‘DIY look’ – an interior just as it left the factory in 1964, only better.
The entire mechanical system has been overhauled and is in mint condition. The air-cooled two-cylinder rear engine runs cleanly, quietly and reliably. All components – from the gearbox and braking system to the chassis and electrics – were professionally overhauled or replaced with faithful-to-original spare parts during the restoration.
Built in 1964. The vehicle has undergone a meticulous and meticulously documented full restoration. Every step of the work is fully documented – a key advantage that is becoming increasingly important in this sector.
The vehicle comes with TARGA ORO ASI certification – the highest accolade awarded by the Italian Automotoclub Storico Italiano, granted exclusively to vehicles in outstanding original condition or following exemplary restoration. The complete restoration documentation is included with the vehicle.
This 1964 Fiat 500 D combines three characteristics that are rarely found together in this combination: the sought-after variant with suicide doors, a full restoration carried out without compromise, and the TARGA ORO ASI as the highest seal of quality. A vehicle for collectors who are not simply looking for ‘a 500’, but the finest example in its class.
A restored 500 D is not just a car – it is a time machine guaranteed to put a smile on your face. This example has exactly the blend that makes this model range so appealing: charming in every line, authentic in every bolt, and in this condition simply better than it was back then. Anyone who has ever driven through a small Italian town with the soft top down will understand why this car has never really aged.
