One of only 2,290 Baur convertibles builtIn the consignor’s collection since 2013Restored by a BMW employeeA Targa with extensive rally experience

The successful 02 Series received a new look as part of its 1973 facelift. Rectangular rear lights, a black plastic kidney grille and redesigned bumpers gave the BMW a more modern appearance – while the open-air version naturally remained part of the range. The Baur Cabriolet received all the same updates as the standard saloons. The basis remained exclusively the 2002, powered by its two-litre four-cylinder engine producing 100 hp. This gave the open car enough performance to live up to its sporting credentials. Only 2,290 examples were produced by 1975. Today, the Baur Cabriolet is one of the rarest variants of the 02 Series – distinctive, practical and unmistakably 1970s.

This late 2002 Targa was first registered on 21 May 1975 and initially saw regular use. In 2005, it travelled from Hamburg to Saarbrücken, where it remained registered with historic plates until it was deregistered in November. It subsequently appears to have made its way to Lower Bavaria. Invoices suggest that the Targa was extensively restored there by a BMW employee from Dingolfing. The work was completed with a new TÜV inspection in February 2010, at 36,496 kilometres.

The consignor acquired the Targa as early as May 2013, with approximately 36,800 kilometres recorded at the time. Over the following years, the 2002 was used primarily in classic-car rallies, covering almost 8,000 kilometres in the consignor’s ownership. It was a much-enjoyed classic: rare and therefore welcomed wherever it went, adequately powered by its 100 hp and, above all, exceptionally reliable. The regular servicing and maintenance carried out since 2014 undoubtedly contributed significantly to this.

The advantages of the Targa need little explanation: the pleasure of open-air motoring combined with rarity and ample performance. These are precisely the qualities that make the 2002 Baur Cabriolet one of the most sought-after versions of the series. But how often does one come across a solid 2002 Targa like this, especially finished in Fjord Blue Metallic and complemented by original alloy wheels and a sports steering wheel?
