Descrizione

In 1965, Peugeot presented the 204 model range, a lower-medium-class vehicle with a concept that was to set standards worldwide. The compact body offered interior space previously found only in considerably larger vehicles. This was made possible by the transversely mounted engine at the front and the associated front-wheel drive. At the same time, this enabled a fairly simple yet all the more efficient suspension geometry, which in turn set standards in terms of comfort and handling. In 1969, the 304 model range was launched in addition to the 204. It was essentially identical to the 204, but featured a longer trunk (saloon only), differently styled front end, and more power. In Germany, the model range competed with the Opel Ascona A, Ford Taunus, and first-generation VW Passat, and remained in production until 1979. From 1970 to ’75, the short yet highly elegant coupé with tailgate and folding rear seat was available. As an S model with twin carburetors, the car provides plenty of driving enjoyment and, almost sixty years after its launch, still surprises with its dynamic handling. Today, hardly any of these cars have survived, and the few that remain are almost all more or less rotten or modified beyond recognition.

This Peugeot 304 S Coupé was first registered in Cologne on 14 February 1973. Until June 1991, when it had covered 56,432 kilometers, the vehicle was in its first owner’s possession and was then purchased by a Peugeot enthusiast from Düsseldorf because of its exceptionally well-preserved condition. This enthusiast entered the vehicle, exactly as he had bought it, in a Peugeot beauty contest and was awarded third prize by a jury that included Christian Peugeot. One year later, the enthusiast had the already sensational car completely dismantled, stripped the underbody, wheel wells, and inner fender aprons, had the car repainted, and replaced everything that no longer appeared as-new with new parts. The front axle components and subframe were galvanized and then painted in the original color. The edges of the hood were hot-dip galvanized, and the hood was painted true to the original, meaning in two colors on the underside. The coupé was restored to the optimum condition Peugeot would have hoped for at its press presentation in 1970. The work is documented in an “illustrated book for a picture-book car,” in which all the work is described through photographs and text. This was in 1992/93, and at the time DM 27,313.83 was invested in parts, plus around 2,000 hours of labor. In 1998, the gentleman from Düsseldorf sold the vehicle to a professional dealer specializing exclusively in spare parts for classic Peugeots of the 04 series, from the 104 to the 604.

We first saw the car at his premises in 2012 and would have loved to take it home immediately. It was not until 2019 that the parts dealer decided to sell the coupé, and we immediately brought it to Berlin. At that time, it had covered 72,347 kilometers. We then sold the Peugeot to the managing director of a large German industrial company, who registered it at his main residence in Germany but took it to his summer house in southern France. Since then, he has driven it 4,496 km, and he too always treated the vehicle carefully and had it professionally serviced. Among other things, he had the clutch replaced and a fender and the tailgate repainted—not because they were rusty, but because they had unfortunately suffered minor scratches. The former managing director now spends less time in France and is convinced that the car does not deserve to gather dust there. So he brought the car back to Berlin for us to market it again. This sensational Peugeot 304 S Coupé is fully documented and promises the highest level of attention combined with maximum appeal. It deserves to continue being perfectly maintained and treated with care.
