Timeless S-Class Icon – The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupé
In the autumn of 1961, Mercedes-Benz complemented its flagship saloon with the addition of a Cabriolet and a Coupé. These were among the last Mercedes models to be largely hand-built. The Coupé was based on the same platform as the saloon, making it a genuine four-seater of full grand touring capability.
What makes the 280 SE/C offered here even more desirable is its 3.5-litre V8 engine, introduced only in November 1969. This upgrade was accompanied by a lower radiator grille and a flatter bonnet, lending the facelifted model a more modern and sleeker appearance. What elevates it to the ultimate version of the W111 series is its manual gearbox. Of the 3,270 V8-powered examples produced, only just over one hundred were equipped with manual transmission.
Our example was first delivered in Switzerland and retains matching numbers. From 1996 onwards, the Coupé resided with a Dutch collector, who commissioned a comprehensive frame-off restoration of the body and had it refinished in its original colour, Anthracite Grey metallic. Since 2020, the car has been with its second owner in Switzerland. A substantial file of invoices, documents and correspondence from recent years accompanies the vehicle, and it successfully passed its most recent Swiss veteran MOT inspection in February 2026.
Equipped with the optional air conditioning and four electric windows, this elegant Coupé still retains largely its original interior, complemented by a period-correct Becker DAB radio. Only the carpets and seat padding have been renewed in recent years, while the seats themselves still carry their original upholstery, contributing to a highly harmonious overall impression alongside the dark wood trim. All in all, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a true crown jewel of German automotive engineering.
