Elegance in the Open Air – the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet

In the fall of 1961, Mercedes-Benz introduced a convertible variant alongside its flagship saloon. This model was one of the last Mercedes models built largely by hand, which is why its price was nearly twice that of the saloon. In Switzerland, the 220 SE Cabriolet cost CHF 36,800 in 1963 the equivalent of nearly CHF 150,000 today.

The 220 SE Cabriolet embodies motoring in its most elegant form. It is a true driver’s car with the luxury and near-equal space of a chauffeur-driven saloon. Powered by a fuel-injected six-cylinder engine producing 120 hp – and paired with a fully synchronised 4-speed manual gearbox it ensures a smooth and refined cruising experience.

This particular 220 SE, delivered new in Germany in 1963, has 105,000 km on the odometer. Since 2001, approximately CHF 100,000 has been invested in the car, including a complete refurbishment of the interior in dark brown. The engine and body have matching numbers. In addition, the fully serviced car still holds a valid Swiss veteran vehicle inspection (MFK) certificate, to be renewed in one year.
