Style. Power. Tradition. – The 1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster
Jaguar’s XK range was born in the late 1940s as a pragmatic solution to showcase the company’s first in-house engine: a long-stroke inline six-cylinder with twin overhead camshafts. Following its debut at the 1948 London Motor Show, orders for the XK120 quickly exceeded all expectations.
While the economic climate of the early 1950s was certainly favourable, the Jaguar itself had much to offer: the XK120 was the fastest production car in the world, relatively practical for everyday use and priced at little more than three times the cost of a Volkswagen Beetle. Add to this its strikingly streamlined design — not entirely unprecedented, perhaps, but compared with it, an MG of the same era looked little more than a soapbox.
The evolution of the XK120 arrived in 1954 in the form of the XK140. It featured slightly larger windows, increased interior space and a modern rack-and-pinion steering system.
This Jaguar XK140 has been meticulously restored. In the process, genuine period Jaguar parts and components were used throughout, including an engine block and cylinder head for the replacement engine. However, the vehicle’s chassis number was altered during the restoration.
Thanks to its excellent overall condition, this Jaguar XK140 has nevertheless consistently passed inspection with veteran status since its arrival in Switzerland in 2009, most recently in March 2024.
