This is an incredibly special, low mileage, upgraded Jaguar XJ6 that comes with an incredible history file dating back to the original bill of sale. AKG 980L has covered 63500 miles from new and was supplied by Lex Mead of Cardiff on the 11th of July 1972 as a 2.8 manual with heated rear window, Sundymglass, inertia seat belts and Endrust treatment to a gentleman who retained the car for its first 28 years. While in possession of the first owner, the original engine proved troublesome, a well documented issue with the 2.8 engine unit. In 1986 at 40,000 miles, the 2.8 unit failed for the second time at which point the car was upgraded to the currently equipped, more capable, and more reliable 4.2L powerplant. At the same time the braking system was upgraded to the specification of the original 4.2L cars.
In the year 2000, the Jaguar moved onto its second owner who retained ownership for a further 17 years. Throughout both period of long-term ownership, the car was kept in a heated garage and well looked after. With the bodywork being exceptionally original, straight, and well preserved, the third keeper had some cosmetic work carried out to include a full re-spray in the cars correct original colour, Warwick Grey. The interior was treated and still presents in the original colour of Red
In 2018, the car was briefly owned by a close family friend of ours and AKG 980L was taken to highly regarded West Yorkshire Jaguar specialists West Riding Race and Restoration for several thousand pounds worth of work to include removing the engine for detailing fixtures and fittings within the engine bay, new windscreen seals, new headlining, new carpets, new coolant hoses and a thorough service and MOT. The car had also benefitted from having the carbs stripped and cleaned along with fuel lines and tanks, the water pump replaced, and steering rack replaced. We sold the car later in 2018 for £17,995 to a customer based in Devon who kept the car for two years before moving it on privately to its most recent keeper in 2020. Since then the car has been even further improved with some very expensive upgrades and upkeep to include a Realm Heritage 5-speed gearbox, manual choke conversion, all new shock absorbers and coil springs, a new aluminium radiator, a 6-branch stainless steel manifold, new cam cover gaskets, distributor cap and plug lead set, and thermostat. A set of MWS bolt on chrome wire wheels have also been fitted.
Since the 4.2 engine upgrade the Jaguar has covered just 23000 miles and with its upgrades the car makes for an incredibly reliable, fantastic driving car capable of regular use and ideal for longer distance touring. The XJ6 Series One is superb on the road, it's exceptional to drive and in first class mechanical order. Throughout, the XJ6 presents superbly with a very original look to it, still in its factory colour of Warwick Grey and retaining its original Red leather upholstery that really looks fantastic. This is a fabulous car with great provenance, history and some wonderful upgrades.
