When the E39-generation BMW M5 debuted in 1998, it redefined the performance saloon segment. For the first time, BMW M combined the understated elegance of the 5 Series with a naturally aspirated V8, creating what many enthusiasts still regard as the definitive M5. With its perfect blend of long-distance comfort, analogue driving character, and motorsport-derived engineering, the E39 has become one of the most sought-after modern classics.

About this M5

Presented here is a remarkably original and highly desirable BMW M5, produced at BMW's Munich plant on the 25th of June 2000 and delivered new to Rome, Italy through SAMO Car S.A. on the 21st of September 2000. Today the car has covered just 57,800 kilometres from new, making it a particularly low mileage example of BMW's legendary supersaloon.

Adding further to its appeal is the specification. Finished in Schwarz II, BMW's deep non-metallic black finish, and paired with a full Heritage Black Nappa leather interior, fine wood trim, and anthracite Alcantara headliner, this M5 presents exactly as a flagship sports saloon should. Particularly noteworthy is the rare no sunroof configuration, a highly sought after option among enthusiasts due to the cleaner roofline, lower weight, and increased chassis rigidity.

The Green Book inspection carried out in June 2026 confirms the vehicle's authenticity and originality, including paint measurements consistent with factory paintwork across the majority of the vehicle.

Exterior

The timeless design of the E39 M5 remains one of BMW's greatest achievements. Subtle wheel arch extensions, signature M aerodynamic enhancements, quad exhaust outlets, and purposeful proportions distinguish it from the standard 5 Series without compromising its understated character.

This example is finished in Schwarz II, arguably one of the most elegant colours available on the E39. The inspection report concludes that the paintwork is estimated to be factory original, with paint depth measurements supporting an exceptionally honest and unmolested car. The report notes only minor imperfections consisting of small scratches, stone chips, light wear to the alloy wheels, and a paint blemish near the right front door handle, all consistent with careful use over twenty five years.

Interior

Inside, the cabin reflects the understated luxury that defined BMW's flagship performance models at the turn of the millennium. The Heritage Black Nappa leather upholstery remains well preserved, complemented by elegant fine wood trim and a desirable anthracite Alcantara headliner.

The Green Book inspection notes that the seats remain in good condition while recommending leather treatment to preserve their appearance. Minor age-related observations include a loose section of roof lining, a non-functioning remote key, and two electrical wires for the rear window system without technical significance. Instrumentation remains functional, although a few pixels in the odometer display are affected, a known characteristic of the E39 platform.

Engine

Power comes from BMW Motorsport's magnificent 4.9-litre S62 V8, an engine that helped cement the E39 M5's reputation as one of the greatest sports saloons ever produced. Producing 400 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, the naturally aspirated V8 sends power exclusively to the rear wheels through a six speed manual gearbox, a combination that has virtually disappeared from modern performance cars.

This particular example has recently benefitted from important maintenance work, including replacement of the mass airflow sensors and a dynamometer test to verify engine performance. The Green Book inspection further supports the car's strong mechanical condition, with favourable findings throughout its technical assessment and compression testing.

Service and maintenance

Although the historical service documentation is limited, the recorded maintenance history includes an Inspection II service carried out by Lario Bergauto in Bergamo during March 2021. Additionally, the comprehensive Green Book inspection performed in June 2026 presents a reassuring overview of the car's current condition.

Key findings include:

  • Chassis number verification and matching vehicle identification.
  • Paintwork assessed as predominantly factory original.
  • Strong overall mechanical health during inspection.
  • Compression testing performed and documented.
  • Only minor cosmetic and age-related observations noted.

Summary

Finding an E39 M5 is no longer difficult. Finding a highly original, low mileage example with only 57,800 kilometres, rare no sunroof specification, desirable Schwarz II over Heritage Black Nappa leather configuration, documented Italian provenance, and inspection-confirmed factory paintwork is an entirely different proposition.

This Munich-built M5 represents everything collectors and enthusiasts seek in an E39 today. Originality, rarity of specification, low mileage, analogue performance, and one of the greatest naturally aspirated BMW engines ever produced. As modern performance cars continue to become increasingly digital, the appeal of a well-preserved E39 M5 only grows stronger.
