There are cars that require ten minutes of explanation before you can tell someone why they are fun. An MGB does not. You open the door, get in, look out over that long hood, and turn the key. Top down, and that is it. Sometimes driving really does not need to be much more complicated than that. And MG understood that remarkably well in the 1960s.

When the MGB arrived in 1962, it succeeded the MGA. Visually, the family resemblance was obvious, but underneath, quite a lot had changed. The MGA still used a separate chassis, whereas the new MGB featured unitary construction. That made the design more modern and also allowed the engineers to make smarter use of the available space. Because although the MGB is not a large car, it is surprisingly comfortable to sit in. There was more room for both driver and passenger than in its predecessor.

Under the hood was the familiar B-Series four-cylinder engine, now with a displacement of 1,798 cc. No exotic engine, and no huge horsepower figures either. None of that was necessary. The combination of relatively low weight, a manual transmission, and that four-cylinder engine delivered exactly the kind of driving experience people bought an MG for.

In October 1964, the engine received an important update. The earlier three-main-bearing crankshaft was replaced by a crankshaft with five main bearings. This example therefore has the later version of the 1.8-liter engine, while still retaining all the appealing exterior details of the early MGB. And that is precisely what makes the combination so interesting.

This is a genuine early-series car with chrome bumpers, a steel dashboard, and that beautiful early steering wheel. These are details that changed later during the MGB’s long production run and give an early example an immediately different character.

Our example was delivered new in the Netherlands in 1966 and was already equipped at the time with several features you like to see on an MGB: twin SU carburetors, wire wheels, and leather upholstery. The color certainly helps as well. Old English White with a black leather interior and white piping. Very British.

This MG was restored in the past and has been carefully maintained ever since. Its history has also been well preserved. Get in. Start it. Put the top down and, most likely, deliberately take the long way home. Contact Gallery Aaldering today and discover this MGB for yourself. We export our vehicles worldwide; please ask us about the possibilities.
