HISTORY
Unique in the Netherlands: this MG B Roadster Limited Edition, of which only 420 were built for the English market. This is the last series of the MG B to be built, when production of the MG B had actually already stopped. At the time, interested parties were entered into a lottery to become the owner of a Limited Edition. The current owner of this car had registered for a GT (coupé), of which 580 were built, but was unsuccessful. His brother, who lives in England, was more fortunate when registering for a roadster and became the owner of this model. After enjoying the car for four years, it passed to its current owner: an MG collector in the Netherlands who has owned several MGs for decades. The car was registered with Dutch number plates in 1988 and has always been cherished and well maintained. The car has mainly been used for touring, which is why the mileage is limited to 51,045 miles (82,149 km). Unlike many other examples, this one has been kept in very original condition. Because it is a late-built example, it is considered by many to be the best-driving MG B.
EXTERIOR
All 420 roadsters built were originally finished in bronze metallic paint with gold striping on the side and orange seat upholstery. A beautiful and retro colour combination. This example is free of damage and rust and is still in its original paint. The rubbers, lighting and chrome work are in good condition. The overall visual condition is good with only minimal signs of wear. Characteristic of the later B models are the front spoiler and the popular 4-spoke alloy wheels, which are also in good condition. The soft top is also in good condition with no tears or damage, and the fastenings work well.
INTERIOR
The interior is striking due to the orange seat upholstery with brown stripes, as originally delivered. The interior is also in original and good condition. Thanks to its year of manufacture, it is equipped with comfortable amenities such as a centre armrest, a leather-covered steering wheel, heating and a Pioneer radio/cassette player. The many gauges in the dashboard include an oil temperature gauge and a clock. The synchronised 4-speed gearbox has an overdrive, which provides a pleasant “5th gear”. The boot has room for the spare wheel.
TECHNICAL
Technically, the MG is well maintained and starts, drives and shifts gears excellently. The tyres are as good as new and the MOT is valid until 6 February 2027. In short: a very original example of a car that is unique in the Netherlands!
GENERAL INFORMATION
The MG B: a popular sports car as it should be: lightweight, agile and a joy to drive. The MG B succeeded the MG A in 1963, a car that was already quite popular for MG - part of The British Motor Company (BMC) - with over 100,000 units sold. The MG B would be produced until 1980, with more than half a million units ultimately being manufactured. In addition to the roadster, other variants were also produced, such as the MG B GT three-door 2+2 coupé (1965-1980), the six-cylinder MG C (1967-1969) and the eight-cylinder MG B GT V8. With its 1.8-litre engine and 95 hp, the MG B was considerably more powerful than the 1.6-litre MG A. In addition to performance and handling, the MG B had to score highly in terms of safety and affordability. This combination made the car a great success. The body is self-supporting and the low centre of gravity and use of aluminium body parts ensure a low weight of 970 kg and a high degree of manoeuvrability. The independent suspension system, in turn, enhances comfort. In short: a great success at the height of the British car industry. An ideal classic for touring, holiday trips or simply to cherish.
