In 1957, Maserati built one of the most important cars in its history. Sixty years later, the marque decided that a birthday cake and a few candles simply would not do. Instead, it created 400 special editions of the GranTurismo. This is one of them.
The Maserati introduced in 1957 was the Maserati 3500 GT. An elegant coupé by Touring, it marked the beginning of Maserati’s transition to larger-scale series production. It was a true grand tourer: fast enough to make a serious impression, yet comfortable enough to cover long distances with ease. That same year, Juan Manuel Fangio also claimed the Formula One World Championship behind the wheel of the Maserati 250F. All things considered, 1957 was a very good year for Maserati.
To commemorate that milestone six decades later, Maserati introduced the GranTurismo and GranCabrio Sport Special Edition in 2017. Combined production was limited to just 400 examples. Each car received a number of exclusive details, including a plaque on the center tunnel referencing 1957, 2017, and the model’s limited production run.
Many enthusiasts are barely aware that this edition even exists. Perhaps that is because Maserati resisted the temptation to bolt on an oversized rear wing. From a distance, what you see is simply a particularly beautiful GranTurismo. It is only upon closer inspection that you realize exactly how special it is.
This particular example is finished in Grigio Lava, paired with a Nero Poltrona Frau leather interior. It is a restrained yet distinctly sporting color combination. The long hood, low roofline, and muscular rear end ensure that a GranTurismo retains a sense of drama even in a dimly lit parking garage. It does not have to be red to look unmistakably Italian.
Beneath the hood lies the naturally aspirated 4.7-liter V8. There are no turbochargers waiting to build boost and no speakers artificially enhancing the soundtrack. Press the start button, and eight cylinders take over the conversation. Refined when you drive calmly, yet completely transformed the moment you ask the engine to work harder.
This example comes directly from its first owner and has covered fewer than 18,000 kilometers. Its condition reflects that remarkably low mileage in every respect. The exterior, the Poltrona Frau leather interior, and every detail present as though the car had only recently left the showroom. Cars like these were generally purchased to be enjoyed—for grand tours, memorable weekends away, and drives where the route was deliberately made longer than necessary. Quite understandably so. Finding one with such limited mileage and in virtually showroom condition is therefore an especially welcome bonus.
A 2017 Maserati GranTurismo Sport Special Edition finished in Grigio Lava with a Nero Poltrona Frau leather interior, offered from its first owner and showing fewer than 18,000 kilometers. Built to celebrate one of Maserati’s finest creations turning sixty. Just one of 400 produced. We love Maseratis. Do you?
