Conte Giovanni Agusta built his first biplane, the AG1, just four years after the Wright brothers had made history in the United States. In 1908, the aviation pioneer founded his company, »Costruzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta S.A.«. By the end of 1923, following facilities in Tripoli and Benghazi, the company had opened its third factory in Cascina Costa, in the province of Varese. Thanks to its location in the industrial heart of Italy, the company also took on the maintenance of military aircraft manufactured by FIAT, Savoia Marchetti, Caproni and Breda.
Conte Agusta died in 1927 at the age of just 47, leaving his life’s work to his wife Giuseppina and their four sons, Domenico, Vincenzo, Mario and Corrado. While the business had flourished during both the First and Second World Wars, the ban imposed on Italy on the construction of aircraft deprived the company of its livelihood at the end of the war. Domenico in particular had already begun considering the consequences of a possible defeat and the diversification of the business in the post-war era during the final years of the war, when Germany’s defeat and that of its allies was becoming increasingly inevitable. On 19 January 1945, the company »Meccanica Verghera S.r.l.« was established.
In October of the same year, the press was presented with a prototype of a two-stroke motorcycle with a displacement of 98 cc. It was originally intended to be called »Vespa«, had Piaggio not already had the same idea for its scooter. Production began in 1946. In addition to the basic »Economica« model, the MV 98 was also available as the sportier »Turismo«, featuring a three-speed gearbox and rear suspension.
As racing classes evolved, motorcycles with 125, 250 and 500 cc engines soon followed. Success on the racetrack had a highly positive effect on the marque’s image. In 1954, a new »Turismo Rapido« with a four-stroke engine was introduced as the entry-level model. It was offered in various versions, including »Extra«, »Lusso« and »America«, which differed in details such as paintwork and chrome trim. The 123.6 cc single-cylinder engine was MV Agusta’s first four-stroke in this displacement class and produced 6.5 hp with a compression ratio of 8.5:1. In fourth gear, it propelled the small motorcycle to an impressive 90 km/h. More than 33,000 examples of all versions were produced by 1958.
This MV Agusta 125 Turismo Rapido America was individually approved for road use in Austria in 2016. As part of the approval process, a new exhaust system was fitted, as the original, which is included with the motorcycle as a spare part, was considered too loud by the inspectors. The present owner was able to acquire the motorcycle later that same year. It was finally registered for road use last year, having previously served more as a display piece than as a vehicle. This comes as little surprise, as Italian motorcycle design of the era produced a remarkable number of small works of art with an unmistakable sense of style.
In addition to the breathtaking »bellezza« of this Agusta, an original owner’s manual provides the final touch of »felicità«.
