• Fully restored matching numbers
• Excellent example of the legendary Suzuki LJ80
• Rare Japanese four-wheel drive
Introduced in the late 1970s as the final evolution of Suzuki's pioneering 'Light Jeep' series, the Suzuki LJ80 refined the formula established by its predecessors, combining a more developed four-cylinder engine with improved usability, while retaining the lightweight simplicity and mechanical honesty that defined its capability. As the direct predecessor to the globally successful Suzuki Jimny, it occupies a significant place in the story of compact four-wheel drive development, bridging the gap between utilitarian origins and the enduringly popular small 4x4s that followed. Today, surviving examples are increasingly rare, particularly those that have not been significantly altered, making well-restored, matching-numbers cars such as this especially desirable.
This 1980 example has benefitted from a comprehensive body-off, nut-and-bolt restoration completed in 2022, and now presents in outstanding condition throughout. The quality and depth of the restoration reflect a clear respect for the model's original character, combined with a thoughtful approach to long-term usability. A complete body-off restoration saw the chassis fully stripped and refinished, supported by a detailed photographic record of the works. The vehicle retains its matching numbers drivetrain, while the engine has been fully rebuilt. It has been professionally refinished in Toyota Dune Beige and re-trimmed in a bespoke tan vinyl and tweed interior. The conversion from hardtop to canvas soft top enhances its period charm.
Mechanically, the LJ80 benefits from improvements including electronic ignition a five-speed gearbox and front disc brakes sourced from a Suzuki Samurai, new carburettor, Denso spark plugs and freshly replaced fluids with all fuel and brake lines renewed during the restoration. More recently, attention has been given to the transfer case bearings and offside swivel hub.
The vehicle is accompanied by a comprehensive history file including a V5 registration document, original Indonesian documentation, a factory LJ80 workshop manual, period marketing materials, and a detailed photographic archive documenting the restoration from start to finish. Offered in exceptionally well-restored condition, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the earliest and most characterful compact 4x4s, at a time when well-preserved examples are becoming increasingly difficult to source.
