The first generation BMW Z4 marked a decisive step forward from the Z3. Introduced in 2002 and arriving in Europe in 2003, the E85 combined classic roadster proportions with a considerably more modern and distinctive design. Its long bonnet, low seating position and compact rear section preserved the traditional front engined, rear wheel drive sports car formula, while the dramatic surfaces gave the Z4 an identity entirely its own. The early European range was centred around BMW's naturally aspirated straight six engines, including the 2.5i found here. BMW Z4 (E85).
About this Z4 Roadster
This early BMW Z4 2.5i is exactly what made the original E85 such an appealing sports car in the first place, a naturally aspirated straight six up front, rear wheel drive, two seats and a proper fabric roof. Finished in Titan Silver Metallic, it has the crisp, unmistakable proportions of the earliest Z4, before later revisions softened some of the original design.
With just 127,571 km recorded at our inspection, this is a wonderfully usable example rather than a car that has spent its life hidden away. Better still, there is substantial documentation for the maintenance carried out over the years, including considerable expenditure on the hydraulic convertible roof system, suspension, brakes and ignition system.
Exterior
Titan Silver Metallic works particularly well on the Z4, as the bright metallic finish really brings out the dramatic creases and concave surfaces that define the E85. It is an unmistakably BMW roadster, with a very long bonnet, seating pushed towards the rear axle and a compact tail.
The car presents well, but importantly we are not trying to pass it off as a concours example. There are small scratches and signs of use, including marks on the front wing, front bumper, mirror and rims. The headlamp lenses have also become dull with age and would benefit from polishing. In other words, this is an honest Z4 that can be driven and enjoyed without being frightened of adding a kilometre to the odometer. Please see the Green Book under the downloads-section for specifics.
Engine
And this is where an early Z4 really begins to make sense. The 2.5 litre naturally aspirated straight six is precisely the sort of engine BMW built its reputation around, smooth, responsive and considerably more charismatic than the four cylinder turbo engines that dominate modern sports cars.
Six new spark plugs and six ignition coils were fitted in 2024, and the accompanying history shows that this Z4 has received considerably more attention than a simple annual oil change.
