This Alfa Spider is the top-of-the-range 2000 "Veloce" spec, with 129 hp 1962cc engine and limited-slip differential. Presented in its original Bronzo Metallizzato (842), this Spider wears what is, in our view, the definitive colour for a Series 2. It just oozes tasteful 70's flamboyance, without trying too hard! It just fits the shape of the Pininfarina lines so well.
Originally delivered in Germany, the Spider was imported into the Netherlands in April 1992 before undergoing an extensive, thoroughly documented restoration by some of the most respected names within the Dutch Alfa Romeo community, including Steutel, Van Lingen and Van Neerijnen. Every stage of the work was photographed and documented, with two dedicated albums accompanying images and an extensive history file with invoices. A tasteful upgrade over the original specification is the beautifully trimmed genuine leather upholstery (as opposed to faux-leather), complemented by a black soft top.
The restoration works were followed by decades of enthusiast ownership with servicing entrusted almost exclusively to renowned Alfa specialist Goos van Pelt, with a substantial collection of invoices illustrating continuous maintenance. It is precisely this level of care that explains why the car still presents with such "freshness" today. The paintwork remains vibrant and consistent, the panel fit is excellent, and the underside is just as great, with original spot welds and factory details still clearly visible in the right areas.
Specified with open headlamps and 14-inch GTA-style wheels, this Spider remains pleasingly true to its original Alfa Romeo character. The twin Dell'Orto carburettors are beautifully tuned, allowing the twin-cam to start effortlessly from both cold and hot, settle immediately into a smooth idle and pull cleanly throughout the rev range. The gearbox is precise, the synchromeshes excellent, and the drivetrain feels remarkably free from unwanted rattles or vibrations, exactly as a well-sorted Spider should. Fitted with a period Philips radio that works perfectly, all electrics and ancillaries function without any issues. A detacheable wind deflector adds that little useability for the longer trips as well!
Having now covered about 250 km's with the Spider ourselves, we can confidently say this Spider drives every bit as well as it presents. It is an honest, exceptionally well-preserved example that has clearly spent its life in the hands of knowledgeable Alfa enthusiasts.
The car is accompanied by everything: two sets of keys, the original German owner's manual (!), original jack, spare wheel, wind deflector, numerous expert valuation reports, two restoration photo albums and a vast history file. We have had many great 2000 Spiders over the years, and this one is up there with the best!
