Chassis PRH4824, engine P4824
Purchased in 2011 after several years of searching for a PV or PVI but never finding one in sufficiently good useable condition.
Rolls-Royce continued to produce a chassis for coach-built bodies from 1968 to 1992 but only 374 were supplied, with over 70 to kings and queens and heads of state (seven of these being fully armour plated), 19 to public corporations, 18 to their “music, stage and screen” clientele, and the remainder to businesses and private owners.
Although one started in 1971 was not finished until 1993, and another was destroyed by fire on board a ship delivering to South Africa. For the majority of these magnificent carriages the body was individually built to the new owner’s requirements.
Ours was ordered in July 1973 and eventually supplied over two years later to the Alexander Howden Group (insurance company in London) in August 1975. In the early 1980’s it became the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s official transport with it being used by Princess Anne and the Duchess of Kent whilst on official engagements in the area.
A mileage log for the latter part of their ownership shows mileage at that time to be in the 50,000’s. It then passed to a Huddersfield based businessman who had a small fleet of Phantoms and after a full respray to their house colours of Ascot Grey was used for business use.
They ceased using the Phantoms in the early 2000’s but retained this one as they wanted to complete a comprehensive restoration but in 2011 they lost some of their storage space and hence we were able to purchase it.
We were told it had recently had a full gearbox overhaul by specialist Gary Whitehead. It appears not to have been used much after this work.
On purchase it went to Harvey Wash for servicing and to a local bodywork specialist for comprehensive metal replacement of lower wings including inner rears, sill ends and lower front body mounts.
The car was thoroughly gone through with any corroded areas being treated or replaced, this work included new front coil springs (now unavailable), one front king pin, upper and lower pivot pins, rebuilt rear springs etc. Another specialist Chris Staples rebuilt the heating and demisting systems.
In 2015 Phantom specialist John Smith fully rebuilt the original engine, with new bearings, rings, seals etc and uprated rear crank oil seal using original parts from R-R and this is now reinstalled into the car. The front section of exhaust was also replaced.
The interior has needed no attention being in excellent Baroda Blue wool cloth, the same as the Queen’s.
With a brand new rebuilt engine and the other work completed in the last three years this vehicle is in top condition.
