The Sambabus was produced by VW at their factory in Brazil in 1970.From 1950 to 1956, these buses were built in Wolfsburg alongside the Type 1 ("the Beetle"), but afterwards, they were manufactured at a new factory in Hannover. Production of the Type 1 continued in Germany until 1967, when vehicle #1,833,054 rolled off the assembly line and the new generation of the Volkswagens, the T2, was introduced. However, the production of the classic Type 1 continued in Brazil until 1975.
The nickname “Samba” is said to be inspired by the Brazilian carnival dance, evoking thoughts of carefree vacations and sunshine. The Samba features skylights and a canvas roof, originally marketed as touring models or for exclusive transport. The feeling of freedom, carefree attitudes, and many other good vibes—these are exactly what hit me every time I sit behind the wheel of the Samba bus. Driving this vehicle is not just about enjoying the iconic VW sound, but also about witnessing the joy it brings to others on the road—regardless of age or gender.
A stop usually means a friendly chat with curious people, and everyone associates the Samba with “the good life.” It's impossible to have a bad day when riding in this bus. This Samba bus was fully restored in 2019, the same year it arrived in Denmark. It has been completely disassembled, repainted, and refitted with a new interior. The engine, a 1500cc, was also redone. The vehicle was originally purchased in Denmark in 2019 by an elderly couple from Southern Denmark, who dreamed of using it as a camper during trips around Denmark and Europe. Since its restoration, the bus has been kept in a heated garage and has not been driven on salted roads.
