The Meyers Manx – The Legend of the Beach Buggy
The Meyers Manx is much more than just a car – it is an icon, a symbol of freedom and adventure. Designed and built by Bruce Meyers in the 1960s, the Manx embodies the California beach scene like no other vehicle.
First introduced in 1964, the Meyers Manx was born from the idea of creating a lightweight, agile, and stylish vehicle for use on the beach and in the desert. The chassis of a VW Beetle served as the foundation due to its durability, availability, and versatility. Meyers then developed a fiberglass-reinforced plastic body, making the Manx both lightweight and highly durable.
Its innovative design was not only functional but also visually striking. Short overhangs, wide fenders, and open-body lines made the Manx an instant head-turner.
A Racing Icon & Cultural Phenomenon
The Meyers Manx quickly achieved cult status. It wasn’t just a favorite among beachgoers – it also dominated the desert racing scene. In 1967, a Meyers Manx won the legendary Baja 1000 race, cementing its reputation as a high-performance off-road machine.
The Manx also made a lasting impact on pop culture, appearing in movies, TV shows, and advertising campaigns. It became synonymous with carefree fun and a thirst for adventure.
Engineering & Performance
The Meyers Manx was powered by the air-cooled VW Boxer engine, known for its reliability and ease of maintenance. Thanks to its lightweight construction and high ground clearance, it was perfectly suited for beach and desert terrain alike.
A Timeless Legacy
Although production of the original Manx ended in the 1970s, the vehicle has experienced a revival. Bruce Meyers himself reintroduced modern versions in later years, and in 2020, the Meyers Manx brand was acquired by a new company, ensuring its legacy continues.
The Meyers Manx is more than just a car – it’s a way of life. With its timeless design, versatility, and legendary status, it remains a true symbol of adventure and the pure joy of driving. Whether cruising along the beach, conquering the desert, or simply enjoying the open road, the Meyers Manx embodies the spirit of freedom like no other vehicle.
