Description

Highlights

This 1975 Porsche 914 special conversion is an exceptional one-off with a direct connection to the Austrian Porsche and motorsport scene. The conversion is attributed to Theodor Erhard, who, according to the documented history, worked as a racing mechanic at Porsche Salzburg at the time and later operated under Erhard Motorsport. According to the reviewed documentation, only three examples of this special configuration with a Porsche six-cylinder engine were built; the car offered here is the only documented surviving example. Of particular significance is the Austrian individual approval, in which the modifications were registered through Tomaszo PS.

General Information About the Vehicle

The Porsche 914 was already an unusual sports car by design. Its low-slung Targa body, mid-engine layout and uncompromising focus on low weight clearly distinguished it from traditional front-engined sports cars. In the case of the vehicle offered here, however, this concept was taken considerably further: following the period conversion, the 914 became an exceptionally uncompromising road car powered by a Porsche six-cylinder engine.

The key name in its history is Theodor Erhard. According to the reviewed vehicle documents, Erhard was associated with Porsche Salzburg and motorsport. His approach to this 914 can aptly be described as a racing-car concept for the road. The technical execution went far beyond purely cosmetic modifications.

It is also noteworthy that the modifications were not merely handed down as a later private conversion. They were incorporated into an Austrian individual approval document. Even the exceptionally high noise levels were documented therein – a detail that today says much about the era and the character of this vehicle.

This Vehicle

Exterior

The 914 is finished in red and retains the characteristic low-slung Targa silhouette of the model. At the same time, the photographs show a distinctly more sporting interpretation. Wide wheels, pronounced body details and the low stance immediately reveal the ambition behind the conversion.

Overall, the photographs convey less the impression of a uniformly polished showpiece and more that of a historically evolved specialist vehicle. With a one-off such as this, that unmistakable individuality is an essential part of its identity. Matching Colors have been confirmed based on the reviewed documentation.

Interior

The interior is trimmed in light beige leather, creating a strong contrast with the red bodywork. The low seating position and driver-oriented cockpit retain the typical character of the 914. The car is left-hand drive.

Here, too, luxury equipment is not the focus. Instead, the vehicle was created around the idea of an especially direct and lightweight sports car – a concept to which the 914's minimalist architecture is particularly well suited.

Technical Specification

The heart of the conversion is the documented Porsche flat-six engine, combined with a manual five-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drive. The chassis number is 4752901331. Matching Numbers have been confirmed based on the reviewed documentation.

The special technical configuration and the modifications form part of the reviewed vehicle documentation and the Austrian individual approval. This official documentation is particularly significant for a vehicle built to such an individual specification.

The Porsche was last started and driven without issue approximately three years ago. On that occasion, the somewhat stiff Bowden cable for the front luggage compartment was also lubricated. When the car was started again in June 2026, it was found that a fuel hose needs to be replaced. Regardless, following the extended period of inactivity, a thorough technical inspection including an oil change is recommended. The vehicle is currently not registered and is not being offered as immediately road-ready.

History

The history of this 914 is closely linked to Theodor Erhard. According to the reviewed documentation, the special conversion was created within his motorsport environment. Only three vehicles are said to have been built in this particular Porsche six-cylinder configuration; this example is documented as the sole surviving car.

Another important figure in its history is Egon Zweimüller, through whose mediation the vehicle passed to a dentist in 1979. The documentation also clarifies the chronology of the connection to Erhard through 1986; the initially contradictory-looking dates can be reconciled based on the reviewed records.

The owner at the time kept the Porsche registered until 1995. The current collector knew the car as both a patient and friend and later acquired it for his collection, where it has now remained for decades. Zweimüller's assessment of the car, and particularly its engine, as an exceptional piece has also been passed down – a personal appreciation that fits well with the unique history of this 914.

Service and Documentation

The key document is the Austrian individual approval, in which the major modifications are officially registered. The vehicle documentation also records its development and ownership history, as well as its connection to Theodor Erhard and the subsequent owners.

VIN 4752901331, model year 1975, the red exterior, the light beige leather interior and the identity of the special conversion are confirmed. The Porsche six-cylinder engine, Matching Numbers and Matching Colors, as well as the documented limited production run of three vehicles and the status of this example as the only surviving one, have also been verified. No separate condition or valuation report is available.

Summary

This Porsche 914 can only be assessed to a limited extent by the standards of a standard 914. Its significance to collectors lies instead in its individual technical history, connection to Austrian motorsport and documented individual approval. The fact that, according to the reviewed documentation, only this example of the three cars built to this specification has survived further reinforces its unique status.

Added to this are a history that can be traced over several decades, Matching Numbers and Matching Colors, and the Porsche six-cylinder engine as its technical centerpiece. After an extended period of inactivity, the car requires an appropriate inspection before its next serious outing; in particular, the fuel hose identified during the June 2026 start-up needs to be taken into account. Precisely because this 914 makes no attempt to be an ordinary production car, it has an unusually distinctive history.

Personal Impression

A 914 is already a car for people who find corners more interesting than prestige. Then a racing mechanic from the Porsche Salzburg environment takes that concept, installs a Porsche six-cylinder engine and has the conversion individually approved, including remarkably high noise levels. The result is less a classic 914 than a piece of Austrian tuning and motorsport history. What I particularly like is that this car makes no attempt to hide its individuality. It is red, unapologetically loud in concept and apparently extremely rare – which is exactly how a racing car for the road should be.
