By 2009, Porsche had already been working with the 997 generation for several years. The first series had proven itself, but as is typical for Porsche, development never stood still. With the arrival of the second series, often referred to as the 997.2, the car was further refined on a technical level. A slightly revised suspension and subtle design changes. Not a revolution, but just enough to make the overall package feel that bit sharper.
The Targa 4S occupies its own position within this range. Always equipped with all-wheel drive, offering a sense of composure and stability while driving, combined with the familiar glass roof concept. Not the traditional Targa bar as seen on earlier 911 models, but a large glass panel that opens electrically. It provides light and a sense of space, without compromising the car’s lines. And that is precisely what makes it interesting.
This particular example is finished in Basalt Black, with a full black leather interior. In our view, a restrained configuration that still feels entirely appropriate today.
What immediately stands out is how well this Porsche has been preserved. The paintwork has a deep, rich shine, the interior is well cared for, and everything feels solid. Driving this example is genuinely enjoyable. The engine runs smoothly, the automatic transmission shifts as it should, and the overall impression is very reassuring—exactly what you would expect. This is further supported by the maintenance history, fully carried out by Porsche itself, starting from delivery at Porsche Zentrum Düsseldorf.
At the rear sits the well-known 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine. Combined with the optional sports exhaust, which can be operated at the push of a button, you can decide how present the sound should be. Subtle when you want it to be, and a bit more pronounced when the mood calls for it.
Inside, you will find comfort seats with ventilation. Perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind in a 911, but on longer journeys, you immediately notice the difference. It makes the car just that bit more versatile, without taking away from its character.
The 997 is regarded by many enthusiasts as a generation where everything comes together. Modern enough for everyday use, yet still retaining the distinctive characteristics you expect from a 911. This is one of those Porsche 911s where you step in, close the door, and immediately understand why the concept has remained unchanged for so long.
