Few sportscars can claim the historical significance of the Porsche 356. Developed during the marque's formative years, it was the model that established Porsche's reputation for engineering excellence, competition success and driver engagement, laying the foundations for every sportscar that followed. By the early 1960s, continual development had transformed the 356 into a highly refined machine, and among the most desirable variants was the elegant 1600 Super Cabriolet.

Completed in 1963, this attractive example is presented in its original and particularly appealing colour combination of Heron Grey with a black soft top over a matching black leather interior. According to its Porsche-issued Kardex warranty card, the car was supplied new through Porsche Glockler in Frankfurt, Germany, and was specified with the desirable 75bhp Super engine, leather upholstery and leather luggage straps. Interestingly, its first owner, Hans Gehrken, was based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, giving the car a fascinating international history from the very beginning.

The accompanying history file traces the car back to at least 1989, by which time it was residing in Los Angeles, California. It was subsequently imported into the United Kingdom and first registered here on 10th November 1992. In 1994, it was acquired by its current owner, who has enjoyed stewardship of the Porsche for more than three decades. A keen enthusiast, the owner undertook a programme of restorative work during the mid-1990s, with invoices and records detailing substantial expenditure. Works included an engine rebuild together with the fitment of a new clutch, flywheel, fuel tank and front brake drums, among numerous other improvements. More recently, in 2013, the interior was comprehensively refurbished by respected trimmers WA Ramsay in the correct original colours and materials, at which time a new convertible hood was also fitted. Today, the car retains its original numbers-matching transmission (No. 59818), while power is provided by an uprated Type 616/36 flat-four engine from a 1966 Porsche 912. Offering approximately 90bhp, it provides a worthwhile increase in performance while maintaining the character and usability for which these cars are so highly regarded.

Combining long-term ownership since 1994, an interesting international history, extensive documented maintenance and restoration work, and one of the most attractive factory colour combinations available, this Porsche 356 B Super Cabriolet represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of Stuttgart's most charismatic open-top sportscars. Equally suited to touring, Porsche Club events or simply enjoying on the open road, it is a charming and highly usable example of an enduring motoring icon. Consigned by Fraser Smith
