1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 (R129)

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 belongs to the early years of the R129 series, which was introduced in 1989 as the successor to the successful R107. With its clean lines, wide body and distinctive design by Bruno Sacco, the R129 represented a significant step forward for Mercedes-Benz. The model combined the elegance of a classic roadster with advanced technology, excellent safety features and the high level of comfort for which the marque was renowned at the time.

This particular example from 1992 is finished in the elegant colour Arctic White, combined with a dark blue leather interior. The white bodywork provides a beautiful contrast to the blue upholstery, dark blue dashboard and wooden trim on the centre console and door panels. The characteristic 16-inch alloy wheels with their chrome finish complement the appearance of this SL particularly well. The car is also equipped with electrically adjustable seats with memory function, automatic climate control and cruise control. In addition to the electrically operated soft top, the removable hardtop is also included.

Under the bonnet lies the 3.0-litre M104 inline six-cylinder engine with 24 valves, producing 232 hp. This engine distinguishes itself from the regular 300 SL through its four-valve technology, which allowed Mercedes-Benz to achieve a particularly refined combination of performance and smooth power delivery. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, transferring power to the rear wheels. This gives the 300 SL-24 the character of a comfortable grand tourer while providing sufficient power for a more spirited driving experience.

The R129 was also particularly advanced in terms of safety. Mercedes-Benz developed an automatically deploying roll bar for this model, which could rise within a fraction of a second in the event of an impending rollover. The car also featured an advanced body structure and various electronic safety systems. These technical innovations made the R129 one of the most modern roadsters on the market at the time.

The history of this Mercedes-Benz begins in the United States, where the car was originally delivered new and registered in the state of Georgia. From February 1994 onwards, the car remained within the same family for more than thirty years. During this period, various maintenance and repair works were carried out, including the replacement of the hydraulic cylinders of the soft top. The headliner of the hardtop was also renewed in 2025. Some of these works are documented in the available records.

The interior reflects the typical Mercedes-Benz quality of the early 1990s. The dark blue leather seats, wooden trim and clearly arranged dashboard create a pleasant and classic environment. The electrically adjustable seats feature a memory function with three preset positions. The car's American origins are also reflected in the speedometer, which displays speed in miles per hour. The odometer currently reads 98,026 miles, equivalent to approximately 157,758 kilometres.

The Mercedes-Benz R129 has now established itself as a recognised modern classic within the marque's history. The early versions in particular stand out for their original design and the high-quality construction that was so characteristic of Mercedes-Benz during this period. This 300 SL-24 combines the powerful 24-valve six-cylinder engine with a classic colour combination, an attractively appointed interior and a long-standing American ownership history. An elegant roadster that convincingly represents the character of the Mercedes-Benz SL, whether driven open or closed.
