Rarely restored Pagoda in Silver Grey with hardtop, matching numbers and an extensive restoration.
The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL of the W113 series is regarded as one of the defining roadsters of the post-war era. The 1969 example offered here has undergone an extensive restoration and, according to the available appraisal, presents itself in exceptionally well-maintained overall condition. Particularly noteworthy are its documented matching numbers, the original hardtop, and the original Mercedes-Benz/Fuchs alloy wheels. Although the current Silver Grey paintwork is not the car's original delivery color, it matches the factory finish of the original hardtop and perfectly complements the elegant character of the vehicle.
When Mercedes-Benz introduced the W113 in the spring of 1963, it succeeded the legendary 190 SL and 300 SL Roadster. Designed under the direction of Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, the series combined elegant styling with an exceptionally high level of safety for its time. Its enduring nickname, "Pagoda," comes from the slightly concave hardtop, whose distinctive roof shape resembles that of Asian temple architecture.
With the introduction of the 280 SL in December 1967, the model reached its technical peak. Its 2.8-liter M130 inline-six engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection produced 170 SAE horsepower, or approximately 180 DIN horsepower according to contemporary publications. The engine is renowned for its strong torque delivery and exceptional smoothness. Combining sporting performance, long-distance comfort, and outstanding build quality, the 280 SL quickly became the most successful version of the W113 series.
Today, the 280 SL ranks among Stuttgart's most sought-after classic automobiles worldwide. High-quality restorations with documented history and original mechanical specifications are especially respected in the collector market.
As part of a complete restoration, this vehicle was stripped down to its bare body shell before being refinished in Mercedes-Benz Silver Grey. Originally, the body left the factory in color code 904 Dark Blue, while the hardtop was already painted in DB 180 Silver Grey. Although the car no longer retains its original matching colors, the chosen finish remains historically authentic by using an original Mercedes-Benz factory color specific to this vehicle. According to the appraisal, the paintwork is evenly applied and free from visible defects. The chrome trim, seals, and soft top are also described as being in excellent condition. Only the hood panel gaps could benefit from minor adjustment for absolute perfection.
The interior matches the high standard of the exterior restoration. The seats are upholstered in red leather, creating a striking contrast with the silver exterior. New grey carpets and fully functional instruments reinforce the impression of a meticulously restored vehicle. The luggage compartment is equally clean and complete, including the spare wheel and the original tool kit. According to the appraisal, no signs of corrosion were detected.
The Pagoda is powered by its factory-installed 2,778 cc M130 inline-six engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. According to the appraisal, the engine and chassis numbers correspond, confirming matching numbers. During the restoration, all suspension components, bushings, lines, and wear items were either refurbished or replaced. The engine starts easily, runs smoothly, and shows neither smoke nor fluid leaks. The braking system and driving characteristics are likewise described as faultless. The underbody is rust-free and has been restored to a very high standard.
The vehicle is road registered and most recently passed its official technical inspection on June 21, 2024. Since completion of the restoration, it has covered only approximately 2,600 kilometers, meaning it has been properly run in while still seeing only minimal use. A detailed ownership history is not available; the description is based on the accompanying appraisal documents.
The vehicle is accompanied by a comprehensive condition and valuation report. This documents the scope of the restoration, confirms the matching numbers, and assigns the car an overall condition rating of 1-. The original hardtop and the original Mercedes-Benz/Fuchs alloy wheels are also included with the vehicle.
This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL combines the timeless elegance of the late W113 series with a high-quality restoration and technically impressive execution. Its documented matching numbers, outstanding condition, and tasteful color combination make it an especially attractive example. While the original body color was changed during the restoration, the choice of the authentic Mercedes-Benz Silver Grey finish preserves the vehicle's period-correct character. For collectors and discerning drivers alike, this Pagoda offers an excellent combination of driving pleasure, quality, and long-term desirability.
Some automobiles never grow old—they simply become more charismatic with each passing generation. The Pagoda unquestionably belongs to that category. The later 280 SL models combine the graceful simplicity of the 1960s with the refined engineering of the final production years. In this elegant color combination, it looks completely timeless, exactly as a legendary Mercedes-Benz roadster should: understated, beautifully built, and ready for many more miles on the road.
