Description

The Mercedes-Benz W113 'Pagoda' SL, introduced in 1963, quickly established itself as one of the marque's most elegant and usable sports cars. Styled by Paul Bracq and named for its distinctive concave hardtop, it combined refined road manners with understated performance, making it a favourite among discerning drivers and remaining one of the most recognisable classics of its era. All models feature an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system adapted from the diesel engine. All are rear-wheel drive and are also equipped with independent rear suspension, a feature that greatly improved road handling. Mercedes-Benz Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who was as competent behind the wheel as most racing drivers, demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on a tight short racetrack near Montreux in 1963 where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds and, incidentally, out-performed Mike Parkes in his three-litre V12 Ferrari 250GT.

This beautiful 1966 example was originally registered in the United States, arriving on UK soil in June 2004. Finished in a gorgeous deep blue over a tan leather interior, this 230SL retains all the signature elegance of the Pagoda while remaining wonderfully usable, allowing its next owner to enjoy it as intended. The desirable automatic gearbox provides effortless, smooth motoring, whether navigating the city or enjoying the open country roads. The car has previously benefited from a full service by respected Mercedes-Benz specialists Roger Edwards, while our vendor has continued to ensure it remains mechanically sound, including the recent replacement of the alternator and various other components. Stored by its two previous owners in a secure, humidity-controlled environment, each of whom cherished the car for more than eight years, our vendor has enjoyed the Pagoda for almost two years. However, with a newborn baby naturally taking priority, the time has come for this much-loved 230SL to find a new custodian. With prices for these desirable motorcars continuing to rise, and the cost of a full restoration often discouraging regular use, this presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a sensibly priced example that combines effortless elegance with a level of usability rarely found in the model.
