The ‘sports car boom’ that emerged in the USA in the post-war years presented an interesting sales market. The British car industry was the first to capitalise on this huge demand. Daimler-Benz observed the phenomenon closely and had big plans. The prototype of the 190 SL was unveiled at the 1965 New York Sports Car Show, and the public’s response was simply overwhelming. Deliveries of this stunningly beautiful and robust roadster began in May 1955, and by February 1963, 25,881 units had been built. It was a huge success.
