Description

  1. Maserati Biturbo Spyder Zagato – 1986 – 3530miles – California Delivery

An exceptionally well-documented Maserati Biturbo Spyder from the De Tomaso era with only 5,680 km (3,530 miles) documented from new.

The car was produced in February 1986 and delivered new to California, USA. It is an early Zagato-built Spyder fitted with the carburetted AM453 2.5-litre V6 Biturbo engine, factory ZF automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, MABC (Maserati Automatic Boost Control) and the original cooling configuration for the twin turbochargers.

As an early February 1986 production car, it belongs to the first generation of Biturbo Spyder models hand-built by Zagato during the De Tomaso period.

Developed under Alejandro De Tomaso's ownership of Maserati, the Biturbo range was among the most technically advanced series-production GT cars of its era, featuring twin turbochargers, electronic boost control and water-cooled turbochargers.

The documented history spans almost four decades:

• Produced February 1986
• Delivered new in California, USA
• Exported to the United Kingdom in 1990 at approximately 1,685 miles
• Sold to Frankfurt, Germany in 2010 at approximately 2,066 miles
• TÜV/GTÜ documentation at 2,991 miles in 2016
• Gutachten report at 3,189 miles in 2018
• Imported to Denmark in 2018
• Danish inspection completed in 2024

Archivio Storico Maserati S.p.A. has confirmed in writing the production date, original colour combination, beige leather interior, factory automatic transmission, US-market specification and engine number 104259, corresponding with the engine currently fitted to the vehicle.

The Maserati Historical Archive has further confirmed that the car carries both its original chassis number and an additional US-market identification number applied for North American homologation purposes during the De Tomaso era.

As a significant portion of the factory records from the Biturbo era was subsequently lost, this archive correspondence forms an important part of the vehicle's provenance.

The work focused on preventative maintenance and age-related mechanical servicing following many years of limited use and storage. Comprehensive documentation and invoices accompany the vehicle.

The timing belt was replaced in June 2024.

During 2024–2025 the car underwent cosmetic preservation work and was professionally repainted in its original Blue Silver Metallic factory colour. The work was undertaken to address minor cosmetic imperfections accumulated over the years and is documented with photographs.

The original beige leather interior remains well preserved, displaying natural patina consistent with the vehicle's age and California history, contributing to its authentic character.

The vehicle is accompanied by an extensive documentation file including its original Warranty & Maintenance Guide, Maserati Historical Archive correspondence, registration records, German and Danish documentation, workshop invoices, Gutachten reports and photographs of the chassis, engine and transmission numbers.

The gallery includes 100 photographs covering the exterior, interior, underside, engine bay, documentation and historical records, providing a highly transparent presentation of the vehicle.

A rare opportunity to acquire an early Zagato Spyder with exceptionally low mileage, documented history and a level of provenance seldom encountered among Biturbo models today.
