Description

Italian Dolce Vita on Four Wheels – The 1960 Lancia Appia Vignale Convertible

Few marques embodied technical sophistication and stylistic elegance as consistently as Lancia. Long before innovation became an industry standard, the Turin-based manufacturer repeatedly set new benchmarks with its unitary body construction, narrow-angle V-engines and advanced chassis engineering. Introduced in 1953, the Appia range faithfully continued this philosophy. Conceived as a compact Gran Turismo, it impressed with its excellent road manners, exceptional build quality and the distinctive V4 engine that became one of the hallmarks of the historic Italian marque.

The pinnacle of the Appia range was represented by the exclusive coachbuilt versions produced by Italy's most renowned carrozzerie. Among them, the Convertible by Carrozzeria Vignale remains one of the most beautiful open automobiles of its era. The design was penned by the then-young Giovanni Michelotti, who would later become one of Italy's most celebrated automotive designers. With its perfectly balanced proportions, delicate chrome detailing and elegant lines, the Appia Vignale Convertible beautifully captures the lightness and sophistication of late-1950s Italian automotive design. Between 1957 and 1962, only 1,584 examples were produced, making it one of the rarest and most desirable open Lancia classics ever built.

Power is provided by Lancia's characteristic 1.1-litre V4 engine. Its unusual narrow-angle configuration allows for exceptionally compact packaging while delivering remarkable smoothness and an impressive degree of flexibility for its modest displacement. Paired with a precise four-speed manual gearbox, the Appia offers a refined and delightfully agile driving experience that perfectly reflects Lancia's long-standing commitment to advanced engineering.

The example offered here is presented in an elegant green finish, complemented by a beautifully appointed beige leather interior. This tasteful colour combination perfectly accentuates the delicate lines of the hand-built Vignale bodywork, lending the car a timeless and unmistakably elegant appearance. Showing just 45,000 kilometres, this Appia Vignale Convertible conveys all the authentic charm of an exclusive Italian grand tourer from the early 1960s.

Accompanying the car is an extensive history file containing invoices and documentation tracing its provenance back to the late 1980s. Also included is an identification certificate issued by the Italian Lancia Club, further supporting the documentation of this rare classic. In 2019, the entire front braking system was professionally rebuilt and overhauled. In March 2026, the car successfully passed its Swiss Veteran Vehicle inspection, further confirming its excellent mechanical condition. The sale also includes a factory hardtop, an additional windscreen and a spare set of rear light assemblies, all of which further enhance both the practicality and the collectability of this exceptional Appia Vignale Convertible.
