Description
In the late seventies, Ferrari built cars the way it went racing: guided by engineers, not committees. The 512 BB is the clearest expression of that philosophy. With this model, Ferrari deliberately returned to the legendary “512” designation, a name taken straight from its racing programme, where it stood for a 5 litre, 12 cylinder engine. In road-going form, the meaning became literal. More capacity, more power, more presence. Compared to the earlier 365 GT4 BB, the 512 BB feels stronger, more muscular and more complete. For many enthusiasts, it is the sweet spot of the entire Boxer lineage. With production limited to just 927 examples, every surviving 512 BB is a serious and increasingly rare Ferrari.
This particular 512 BB is one of those cars where everything simply clicks. Specification, mileage, provenance and condition come together effortlessly. Completed in July 1978, it was delivered new directly from the Ferrari factory in Maranello to a Mexican client on export plates. Today it remains in its original factory configuration, finished in the striking and rarely seen combination of Giallo Fly over Pelle Nera VM 8500. Chassis, engine and gearbox are all matching numbers, and the odometer shows just 24.952 km. The history behind this car is as convincing as the car itself. In 1990 it returned to the Netherlands with a documented mileage of only 10.900 km. It later became part of the renowned Kroymans Collection. One of the most compelling chapters followed when the car was acquired by Wolf Zimmermann, Ferrari’s former Head of Engine Development in Formula One. Few custodians could be more relevant for a Ferrari V12. More recently, the car has received all mechanical attention needed. Between 2023 and 2025, more than €26.500 was invested in documented servicing and mechanical work. The car was carefully recommissioned with the aim of ensuring mechanical correctness and dependable use. Key systems, including ignition, fuel delivery and carburation, were professionally refreshed, the belts and related components were renewed, and everything was properly adjusted and set up. Adding to the car’s completeness, the original Ferrari tool kit is still present, a detail that experienced collectors immediately notice and value. The documentation is equally strong, including the original Ferrari document pouch with the 512 BB Berlinetta Boxer books, Italian registration documents, and a comprehensive, traceable invoice history covering both recent and earlier maintenance. Everything lines up.
This is a proper Ferrari 512 BB. One of only 927 built, perfectly specified, with low mileage just under 25.000 km, matching numbers, original colours, meaningful provenance and serious recent mechanical investment.
