On June 12, 1954, Carl Borgward personally presented his most successful model: the new Hansa 1500, which we know today as Isabella. Several stories circulate about the creation of that name. At the time of the development of the new Hansa 1500 nothing was allowed to leak to the press, of course, and so a pseudonym was sought for the project. When asked, Carl Borgward is said to have said, "I don't care what name you use, you can put on the Isabella for all I care." This was done, and when the car was presented, the press mostly kept the name Isabella in its articles about the newcomer.
The factory received many requests to keep this name instead of the boring Hansa 1500. In August 1954 it was indeed decided to do so. According to another, more flattering story, the car was named after Carl Borgward's wife, Elisabeth; Isabella would be the Spanish translation of her name. The 4.40-meter-long Isabella was equipped with a 1,493 cc four-cylinder producing 60 hp, capable of reaching a top speed of 135 km/h.
The Isabella comes at exactly the right time, namely at the height of the so-called "Wirtschaftswunder". More than 11,000 of them were sold in the first half of the year; a year after its introduction, 25,000 had already left the Bremen factory. In the touring car class up to 1,600 cc, driver Adolf Brudes and his Isabella won the notorious 1954 Carrera Panamericana (a street race over 3,070 km) with an average speed of 113 km/h.
