Description

When BMW got back on track financially with their “Neue Klasse” during the sixties, they also had ambitions to enter the sporty luxury class. Successfully they did so introducing the large E9 coupé. Built by Karmann in Osnabrück and based on the 1965 2000 CS and adapted to the larger 6-cylinder M30 inline engine, the BMW 2800 CS was presented in 1968. The larger 3.0 CS with carburetors and 180 HP followed soon after and in 1971 as the 3.0 CSi with 200 HP thanks to an increased compression ratio and Bosch D-Jetronic injection. With only a few more than 30,000 examples of all variants made, of which only app 8,000 in the CSi version, the E9 series was not a gold mine for BMW. It was quite expensive to manufacture, but with its discreet, elegant design, luxury and refinement and its high build quality, it was an important statement for BMW.

As a pillarless coupé and with a large glass area, the E9 coupé is a particularly elegant car from any viewing angle. The light and airy cabin is spacious and the view is excellent. High quality materials all over contribute to making you feel comfortable. Everything is built with high performance and durability in mind. German engineering at its best. The E9 was BMW’s pride and quality-wise it is a top-class car.

This example was originally delivered to Belgium in December 1973 and then imported to Denmark in 2015. The car has been owned by the same conscientious enthusiast ever since, and quite a lot has been invested in the car to improve it. A complete engine overhaul that actually just started with a defective head gasket ended with a NOS cylinder head. And now we’re at it, a 5-speed gearbox from Getrag was added, which really makes a difference when driving on the road and high-speed motorway. New brakes, lights and a stainless-steel exhaust have also been added. Add to that both power steering and a sunroof, quite rare options on this model. The uber-sleek cabin has new leather on the seats, as well as new mats and seat belts. It’s hard to find a more inviting cabin to stay in, the sturdy chairs offer excellent support.

The bodywork and paint still present itself in excellent condition, and surprisingly there is no rust in the usual suspect places for this model, ie in the A-pillar, inner fenders in the engine compartment and by the rear window. A certificate from BMW confirm white Charmonix paintwork is the car’s original color.

It is a true pleasure to sit behind the steering wheel, turn the key and hear the delicious 6-cylinder in-line engine start. Known for its smooth running and willingness to rev. And with the upgraded gearbox and power steering making it a pure pleasure to let the powerful car transport you around in superior style. It is a true BMW Grand Turismo car from the top shelf, where both comfort and driving excellence are in a very high class.
