Description

BMW 1600 Cabrio (1970) – The Gentleman among Classic Convertibles

There are convertibles that scream for attention. And then there are convertibles that whisper to you to put on your sunglasses, play some Dean Martin, and just drive. The 1970 BMW 1600 Cabrio belongs to the latter. Elegant, understated, yet with a touch of Bavarian confidence that sets it apart from the flashy sun-worshippers of its time.

A Baur Convertible with Character

In the late 1960s, BMW was transforming from a post-war manufacturer of practical cars into a sporty and elegant premium brand. And what could fit better into this new identity than a convertible? The Stuttgart-based coachbuilder Baur was commissioned to turn the two-door 1600 saloon into something that smelled of summer, style, and Swabian craftsmanship.

BMW didn’t want design experiments, but a convertible that made use of existing parts. The result was not a low-slung roadster, but a full four-seater cabriolet with elegant lines, a beautiful silhouette, and a touch of restraint. The outcome was rare: only 454 units were built in 1970.

Engineering with Soul

Under the hood works the well-known 1.6-liter four-cylinder that put BMW’s “Neue Klasse” on the map. Paired with a precise gearbox, it delivers a mix of lightness and dynamism not always expected from an open classic. This car is not meant to race. It’s meant to cruise – in style.

Restored with Dedication and Detail

This example was originally delivered in Germany and today presents itself in a condition worthy of concours admiration. The restoration was carried out by a specialist, leaving nothing to chance:

  • Complete overhaul of engine and gearbox
  • Replacement of all safety-related components and hoses
  • Chrome work: bumpers, grilles, trims – all shining like new
  • New seals, re-aligned doors
  • Interior refreshed: new center console, refurbished door panels, renewed trunk carpet

The cost? A documented €12,500 down to the last screw.

Documentation & Extras

  • BMW Classic Certificate
  • Invoices from former owners and recent restoration
  • Owner’s manual
  • Spare keys

Conclusion: Style Never Ages

A BMW 1600 Cabrio is not for everyone. It’s for connoisseurs, collectors, and those with a sense of understatement. Whoever drives it does not want to stand out – but to leave a lasting impression.
