The Austin FX3 was introduced in 1948 and produced until 1958. Designed specifically for London's streets, the FX3 was developed by Austin in collaboration with taxi specialists Mann &Overton and coachbuilder Carbodies. It featured a 2200cc four-cylinder petrol engine, later supplemented by a more economical diesel version. Known for its distinctive pre-war styling, including flared wings and a prominent grille, the FX3 quickly became an icon of postwar London life. It had a tight turning circle tailored for the capital's narrow streets and complied with the strict Metropolitan Police regulations for taxis. Most FX3s had an open luggage platform next to the driver, as was customary at the time. Despite its utilitarian nature, the FX3 offered solid reliability and a comfortable ride. It was eventually succeeded by the more modern FX4 in 1958, but the FX3 remains a nostalgic symbol of mid-20th-century British motoring.

This particular FX3 starred in Cold War spy thriller “The Ipcress File” and is presented in really good order, it is understood the taxi was restored around 15 years ago. This is a very late FX3, registered less than a year before production ended and is powered by the robust diesel engine. This could make a really fun way to drive around London without paying the ULEZ charge, or just something to stand out from the crowd at classic car shows. Supplied to auction with a V5C registration document, some old photos and an original maintenance manual. Consigned by Fraser Smith
