Description

1926 Austin 20/4 Drophead Coupe
Chassis Number: FS15839
Registration Number: UX1700
This late 1926 (1927 model year) 20/4 wears an extremely attractive body to the original specification of the 'Hertford' model - that is, a two-seater with a dickey seat. The dickey was not installed with the rear space being used instead for touring luggage.
The result of a 20-year restoration from 2000 to 2020, the car presents in superb-all round condition like new and has been repainted and retrimmed to the original specification. It goes as well as it looks, thanks to some sensible mechanical upgrades; namely a higher compression ratio and a higher-ratio back axle, now 3.33/1 in place of the original 3.60/1. The whole car is in "as new condition". This fine example of one of the best British cars of the vintage era is a highly useable example. It comes with bills for a total engine rebuild, a new crown wheel and pinion, and axle rebuild, plus a current V5C.
Make no mistake, this is a car with serious perfomance for the year from the strong & very robust 3.6 litre engine. Bear in mind in the 20's in tuned and stripped form an Austin 20 racer lapped Brooklands at over 100mph. This Austin runs along in modern traffic at modern traffic speeds with no trouble at all being both pwoerful & long legged.
The paintwork is of couse brand new in Pillar box red over black. The interior upholstery in black leather is more up to Rolls Royce then austin standards being both comfortable & beautifully done. Grey Carpets under foot complete the ensemble. Just a few hundred miles have been covered since being restored so the car is still in the process of being run in. 6 brand new tyres are fitted & mounted to cast artillery style wheels with two rear mounted spares. The hood is a high quality easily erected mohair item. A full set of new side screens also come with the car. Under the bonnet the engine bay is as clean & tidy as one might expect from a fresh restoration.
