Description

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce – what a name for a car. With a name like that it just has to be a fantastic car – and quite special as well! And indeed, this is the case for the model normally referred to as a “Bertone”. Back in 1963 when Alfa Romeo launched the Giulia Sprint GT as the successor for the old Giulietta/Giulia based models, it was an improved and more powerful version of the traditional GT Coupe. And the design really made a difference. Bertone had spotted the young talent Giorgetto Giugiaro, at that time doing his compulsory military service. Nevertheless, Bertone asked him to prepare some sketches for the new GT and the result was Giulia Sprint GT.

This is the first generation Bertone with the step-nose body (Scalino in Italian), a 1600cc engine and the flat version dashboard. Alfa Romeo wanted to offer a more cost friendly alternative to the expensive GTA model, basically identical except with a steel body instead of aluminum and just single plug ignition. Compared to the normal GT the Veloce featured more sporty bucket seats and a stronger engine producing an impressive 110 bhp as well as more torque. This was achieved by larger intake valves, different cam shafts and intake manifold. From outside the model is recognized by the 3 horizontal chrome lists in the front grille and the famous green clover leaf – Quadrofoglio – on the C pillar. The Veloce version of the Sprint GT is quite rare with only very few left on the roads today.

The car here was produced in June 1967 and delivered in the Italian province Reggio Emilia before being exported later on to Belgium. According to the “Certificato Di Origine” the car livery was the classic Alfa color “Biancospino” with brown skai interior. This car is a absolutely original in all aspects,  a genuine  Veloce which has never been restored! We have seen many Bertone coupes during the years and can confirm that this car is a true time capsule, which will be difficult to find anywhere. A reference car so to speak.

And it drives so well! Everything works as it is supposed to do with such a delicate steering, noiseless transmission and fresh engine response. It makes you really sense the high technical level Alfa Romeo offered in the mid sixties compared to its competitors. This car is aimed at the serious enthusiast or collector, looking for one of the best Alfa Romeo models they made in what was probably the prime period for the marque ever – and in a condition, which will be hard to find anywhere….
