Brand & Model History
The VW T2 “Bulli” (1967–1979), also known by the factory code Type 2 Transporter 2, represents the second generation of the popular transporter. Introduced in 1967, the early version, known as the T2a, came with several improvements: it was larger, had bigger windows, and featured a one-piece windshield. A sliding side door and significantly optimized suspension—now with a ball-joint front axle and a diagonal trailing arm rear axle—came as standard, offering improved stability. The rear wheels maintained a slightly negative camber in all driving conditions, enhancing safety.
The air-cooled flat-four engine, mounted at the rear, now required less space, resulting in increased cargo capacity. Over the years, the vehicle grew in size and power, with engine output reaching up to 70 horsepower. For the first time, an automatic transmission was available as an option. The T2a came equipped with important safety features that made it exceptionally secure compared to American vehicles of the time. All seats could be fitted with lap belts, while the driver and outer passenger seats in the cabin were optionally available with shoulder or combination belts, as emphasized in the first 1967 owner’s manual.
The T2 stood out for its advanced engineering and safety features, which distinguished it clearly from other utility vehicles of its era. It served not only as a transporter but also as a spacious people carrier. These more refined bus versions were labeled “Clipper.” A Volkswagen press release fittingly stated: “New Volkswagen Transporter – like a passenger car.” In collaboration with Westfalia and other outfitters, Volkswagen also succeeded in making the dream of an affordable camper van come true. The T2 could be purchased as a turnkey camper or converted into a mobile home using kits, making it the ideal “one-room apartment on four wheels.”

Condition
The VW T2b Westfalia SO73 offered here comes in the so-called “Malaga” camping equipment variant. Alongside “Düsseldorf” and “Offenbach,” this was one of three versions in the SO73 series. We’ve uploaded an old catalog as a PDF in the listing. The “Malaga” variant is one of the rarest. This particular Westfalia, built in December 1973, was shipped directly to America—finished in this exact color combination of L90D Pastel White and Camping Green upholstery.
The first owner was the U.S. ambassador to Bolivia. He bought the van new from a VW dealer in Texas and then drove it down the Pan-American Highway all the way to La Paz, Bolivia.
The father of the current owner was a close friend of the ambassador and purchased the van directly from him. From 1982 until now, the rare camper has remained in the same family. In 2024, it was brought back to Germany and registered there.
The van can confidently be described as a time capsule. Such a pristine camping interior is rarely found. According to the owner, everything is in full working order.
The vehicle is unwelded and accident-free.

Market Context
The T2b Westfalia remains a cult vehicle and a milestone in the history of camper vans. Its thoughtful design and practicality made it one of the most successful and beloved recreational vehicles of its time.
Today, well-preserved examples are becoming increasingly rare, and market prices have been climbing for years—often exceeding €70,000.
