- Charming British roadster in a very solid body
- Recently entirely rebuilt, photographs and documents available
- ‘Best-selling convertible ever’ for over thirty years
- In MG green, what else?
The MG B was built from 1962 to 1980 and it was crowned the ‘best-selling convertible ever’, eventually being beaten by the MX-5 which was based on this iconic convertible classic. Its success was immense, everyone’s heart was stolen and just over half a million MG B’s were sold. Also, the MG B was made by three manufacturers over time: BMC, British Leyland, and Rover Group, showing British automotive history. The MG B is an accessible classic that is coveted by everyone, especially by aficionados.
As early as 1958, the idea was conceived to design a successor to the MG A, which is considered a pioneer in British roadster history. Though for the successor MG designed a convertible that deviated from the roadster concept and was powered by a four-cylinder engine that originated from the 1940s. The straight-four engine didn't produce an excessive amount of power, as that was not the intention. However, it did produce a delightful growl that seemed to massage the eardrums.
Despite the fact that the design of the MG B dates back to the 1950s, it is equipped with innovative and well-found inventions. An MG B is equipped with a crumple zone that protects the occupants from serious injuries in car accidents. Additionally, the MG B is built on a monocoque body, which means that the ravages of time, especially those inflicted by the road, pose no threat to the solidity of this beloved car and reassuring its immortality.
Over the years, the MG B was modified some times. A hatchback coupe version was introduced in 1965, and the MG C was launched in 1967. The MG C is a sportier variant of the MG B, featuring a six-cylinder engine. However, MG C sales remained modest and it was discontinued in 1967.
The MG B is a classic car that held the title of ‘best-selling convertible’ for a decade. Around the MG B, various communities of enthusiasts have emerged, sharing their passion with each other. Thanks to its success, finding replacement parts is not a worry. It is an accessible vintage car with an interesting history that captivates many.
