UNIMOG 411 – A 1967 Barn Find Full of Character and Soul

Originally developed in the late 1940s as a multi-purpose agricultural machine, the Unimog short for Universal-Motor-Gerät soon proved itself as a highly capable and versatile off-road utility vehicle. The Swiss Army quickly recognised its potential and, starting in 1950, procured over 830 units.

Most of these vehicles were used for cable-laying operations while others served as carriers for snow blowers. As the smallest diesel-powered vehicles in the army fleet, they were affectionately nicknamed “Dieseli” by their operators.

The Unimog model 411/1t was first commissioned in April 1967 for cable-laying operations. Between 1963 and 1973, Switzerland acquired 109 units, 70 of which were deployed with the Army Signal Corps. The Unimog on offer, one of these original military vehicles, was decommissioned in the late 1980s and sold via the Army’s vehicle depots.

As very few military Unimogs remain in circulation today, they are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. After a long period of inactivity, this 411/1t is now being offered as a restoration project in Condition Grade 4. The engine turns freely, providing a solid foundation for restoration. This makes this particular Dieseli the ideal candidate for those with a passion for hands-on restoration – and a love of historic utility vehicles.
