The third generation Maserati Quattroporte (Tipo AM 330), produced between 1979 and 1987, was developed under the ownership of Alejandro de Tomaso and GEPI. Following the Citroën-era front-wheel-drive Quattroporte II, the Quattroporte III returned to Maserati’s roots with rear-wheel drive and a powerful evolution of the Maserati Tipo 107 V8.

Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Quattroporte III combined sharp, modern lines - for the period - with what could be argued a restrained elegance. Early examples carried the “4PORTE” badging, later changed in 1981 to “Quattroporte.” This generation was also notable for being among the last of the hand-built Maseratis, with painstaking attention to detail and seamless exterior panel finishing.

Powertrain options included:

  • Engines:
    • 4.2 L Tipo 107.21 V8
    • 4.9 L Tipo 107.23 V8
  • Transmissions:
    • 5-speed ZF S5 manual
    • 3-speed Chrysler A727 automatic

This particular example with chassis number AM 330 49 4486 is an extraordinary unrestored survivor, originally delivered new in Zurich, Switzerland, to Herr Ernst Rüegg. Ordered in the most desirable configuration – the 4.9****L Tipo 107.23 V8 paired with the 5-speed ZF manual gearbox – it retains its matching-numbers engine.

Still wearing its original factory paint (224.853 Dark Aquamarine-Metallic) and presented with its superb white/cream leather interior, which is possibly the highlight of the car, this Quattroporte remains in remarkable authentic condition. Naturally, there are a couple of stone chips here and there at the front of the car around the bonnet (depicted) however, it all confirms the cars complete originality and viewing is always recommended. Factory lightweight Campagnola alloys are fitted, now wearing fresh Michelin tyres fitted in 2021).

The odometer currently shows 73,738 km, with its history exceptionally well documented. Make no mistake, this car has been driven and just beautifully maintained and backed up with its original Swiss service book including 19 service stamps up to 1998 and 41,857 km. After remaining in Switzerland until 1998, the car has since been cared for by four German custodians, each maintaining its status as a prized collector’s example and all of them clearly continuing with fastidious ownership. The most recent owner has continued this tradition, maintaining nicely since 2021. A comprehensive inspection was carried out in July 2025, and the history file also includes three individual valuation reports (2007, 2011, and 2021).

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a truly outstanding, unrestored Maserati Quattroporte III with a fully traceable history, matching numbers, and the sought-after 4.9 V8 / 5-speed manual specification. Cars of this caliber are seldom offered on the open market, as most reside in private collections.

This is a car for the discerning Maserati collector, and represents one of the finest Quattroporte III’s in existence today. It’s clearly been superbly maintained and driven sparingly but regularly. Further documentation is available upon request.
