The Dave Morgan 1971 Brabham BT35

Chassis #BT35-8

1972 European and British race winning car

Supplied new to Ed Reeves in Formula Atlantic spec with a Hewland FT200 and a Cosworth BDA engine. Raced by Reeves and occasionally by upcoming talent Dave Morgan in Formula Atlantic during 1971.

In 1972 the F2 regulations allowed for 2000cc but due to a shortage of engines (and funds) Dave Morgan had to use a 1840cc Cosworth unit in the inaugural European and British F2 race at Mallory Park.

F2 Rookie Dave Morgan won the race and made it to the front cover of Autosport Magazine for beating a star-studded field including Lauda, Peterson, Reutermann, Fittipaldi, Hailwood, Wollek, Gethin, Jabouille, Scheckter and Purley.

So short of cash was Morgan that after sleeping in his caravan at Mallory Park on Sunday night he awoke to find that he had no money for the fuel to get home. Then he remembered that he won the BP man of the meeting award and used the fuel vouchers that were his prize.

As a result of his 1972 form, Morgan won the prestigious Premier Grovewood Award for Britain’s most promising driver and with that a cheque for £1000.

When Reeves’ BT38 arrived, the car was sold to Australia and raced until 1977 when put in storage.

In 2004 BT35-8 resurfaced and was brought to the UK in 2015 by John Hughes, Dave Morgan’s best friend who commissioned a full rebuilt by Simon Hadfield Motorsport with close attention to period details.

Recently the car has received a full re-commissioning by Biehl Motorsport of Germany and is ready to race again.

We suggest you read https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/may-2006/70/dave-morgan-my-best-day-at-a-circuit/ for Dave Morgan’s own recollection of his great Mallory Park race.
