HISTORY
The Triumph TR4: a popular roadster as it should be: lightweight, agile, and a joy to drive. Combined with a stunning Italian design. Italian design on an English car, you ask? Yes indeed: the design was created by Michelotti, who has provided legendary designs for various coachbuilders and brands such as Ferrari and Maserati. The car was built in 1966 and delivered new to the United States, where the climate is favorable. The last American owner owned the Triumph in Monterey, California. In 1994, the car was imported to the Netherlands, after which it has always been owned by the same owner. The car comes with extensive documentation, including export documents, an original Owners Handbook, and the last MOT form from 2021 (after which an MOT was no longer mandatory due to the age of the car). In addition, there is a thick stack of beautiful books, including a parts catalog and workshop manual.

EXTERIOR
A sight to behold, especially the model we are offering in a beautiful color combination: British Racing Green (color code 75) with a beige leather interior. The paintwork was repainted in the 1990s. Logically, the car has some signs of wear, but there has been no welding on the bodywork and it is a damage-free and very sturdy car. The chrome work and lighting are in good condition. The rubbers show signs of wear. The black soft top is in good condition with no tears. For a good impression, take a look at our extensive photo report, including photos of the underside of the car.

INTERIOR
The interior is still in good condition with only minimal signs of wear. The beige leather is free of tears. The large, almost vertically positioned steering wheel and elegant large dials make the interior a pleasant place to be. The dashboard is beautifully finished with wood. The seats are adjustable. The interior also features optional heating. The trunk is also neat and tidy and has room for the spare wheel, a wrench, and a jack.

TECHNICAL
Both the engine and the gearbox have been overhauled after only 2,852 miles (4,590 km). The underside of the car is very hard and has stood the test of time very well. Adjustable ‘Spax’ telescopic shock absorbers are fitted at the rear. ‘KONI Classic’ shock absorbers are fitted at the front. New rubbers have also been fitted. The car starts, shifts, brakes, and drives very well and is therefore ready to drive for its next owner.

GENERAL
The TR4 is a sports car produced from 1961 to 1965 and is the successor to the TR3. Under the skin, the first series of the TR4 is largely similar to the TR4, but thanks to a longer wheelbase, the TR4 has more space. The larger doors accommodate side windows that can be turned down, unlike the TR3. The TR4 differs from the TR3 mainly in its appearance: a sturdy, large grille and sleek lines. A characteristic feature is the hump on the hood, which accommodates the two carburetors. The TR4 was designed by Italian designer Michelotti, whose contribution guaranteed a stunningly beautiful design, considered by many to be the most beautiful in Triumph's entire TR series. Due to the importance attached to the American market, relatively few units were sold in Europe. The 4-cylinder engine has a displacement of 2138 cc. Thanks to its sporty driving characteristics, a number of TR4s were used by the English police at the time. The TR4 was succeeded in 1965 by the TR4 A IRS, where the letters IRS stand for Independent Rear Suspension. This independent rear suspension provides greater driving comfort and better handling, making it a sought-after model today. Furthermore, the austere metal TR4 dashboard was fitted with a veneered wood panel and the handbrake control was moved to the transmission tunnel between the seats. As the TR4 A IRS was only produced until 1967, the production number of 28,468 units can be considered relatively low. Precise steering, excellent road holding thanks to the well-balanced chassis, sportiness, and flexibility make the TR4 a sporty and coveted touring car.
